Coming with both 1.8 (122HP) and 2.0 (180HP) HSD powertrains, Toyota gets an important update on the market of the compact family cars...

    Looks great!
I doubt we will see it in the US any time soon though.

@Tideland Prius needs to use this magical information connections and start a sticky in Toyota Hybrids.

Which markets are they planning to release this in? Europe only, or will we see a worldwide release?

Shame that Americans don't seem to like hatchbacks too much.

It was designed in Europe. The rest of the world may not see this model shape...

Only a Prius can improve from a Prius :D
The Corolla (ex-Auris E15 and E18) may share the same powertrain, but cannot cope with the Prius sleekness. 4 Gen Prius is still an efficiency leader.

This is actually a wagon. We get the Auris hatchback labeled as a Corolla, which is also true for other markets. Europe also gets an Auris wagon.
With this and the unveiling of a new Corolla hatchback, is Toyota planning the end the Auris and merge the models?

    Not necessarily.
Toyota did not end the HiLux when the Tacoma was released for the US.
Of course the Tacoma now is the size of the original Tundra or T-100 :(

There are physical differences between the two, and the Tacoma isn't sold outside North America.

The Corolla is as a sedan, at least, previously. There hasn't been a Corolla hatch or wagon for awhile. The Auris replaced them, though some markets labeled it a Corolla. Toyota has now unveiled a hatch and wagon for Europe that they actually call a Corolla.

The Toyota Matrix was basically a Corolla wagon. Interestingly, Canada lists both the Corolla and Corolla Hatchback.

That would make a great replacement for the Prius v (wagon). :D Too bad it's not coming to the USA.

    By Spritmonitor records/stats, Auris HSD consumes 5.3l/100km (44.3MPG) while 3Gen Prius consumes 5.1l/100km (46MPG).
We don't have WLTP numbers for this Corolla yet, but 4Gen gets 4.44l/100km by Spritmonitor (52.9MPG), while the same engined (1.8 122HP) C-HR gets 5.39l/100km. Efficiency-wise, Prius keeps leading.

The last Matrix was in 2014, and like like the Solara, Toyota down played the car's roots.
The US site also lists a Corolla Hatchback. Previously, it was the Corolla iM, and originally intended as a Scion model. That though is just a name; it is an Auris hatchback.

But sometimes you have to sacrifice efficiency for utility. Comparing a SUV/CUV shape to a hatchback is not apples to apples. I have a v and am ready for a new car. But even as I stopped this morning to talk to a local Tesla owner who was stopping near the only public charger in town (CHAMDO, 2 plug), I was asking myself if a Model 3 or even an S would have made the trip I was on. King size bed frame just fit in the v with its rear seats down. Add in my 2' by 2' by 2' box of recycles, xerox box full of recycle newspapers, 6 broken-down large cardboard boxes and 3 bags of trash. Oh and a library book and 2 bags of groceries. Yes the bed frame is exceptional but the recycle load is pretty routine.

My fuel costs since the last fill up have been $1.50 or so a day and that has included 3 70 MPH trips with A/C to the big city 50 miles away.

I figure I saved more money by combining a trip my wife in her V6 would have made with my duties than any savings a Prime would have saved me.

Efficiency is not the/my only buying criteria.

i had a perfect, low mile $12,000. 2001 taurus that i traded in for my $26,000. 2004 prius.

counting all the gas savings over 14 years, i still lost money on the deal.

Here in Europe we have the Prius+, which is a Prius v with 7 seats, which consumes more or less the same as the C-HR. That kind of sacrifices for utility you say? :D

I'll do it when the reviews start coming out. Or I guess I can do it in October when the press writes their first impressions at the Paris Motor Show.

Yup. The Corolla nameplate is back in Europe. Looks like Toyota is planning on expanding the Corolla nameplate (see the other thread about a "Corolla Cross")
