Has anyone tried to swap a gas tank from a corolla, Matrix or Pontiac Vibe in place of the bladder tank. Physically the tanks look like they will bolt right in and I can get one for $22 at the local junk yard. I’m sure it will throw a code but as long as it runs and drives fine I’m ok with it. Just looking to go a longer distance between fill ups. I live in Florida and we are back in the 70’s and I had 2 ticks left on the gas gauge and it still stopped at 4.7 gallons and wouldn’t fill anymore.

    Rationing fuel again?

Do you always use the same gas station and or pump?

I've experienced some pumps clicking off early when not functioning properly, generally I just move on to a new pump or station.

I found that the race track near me has a pump that never acts up or clicks early and that’s the pump I always try to fill up at. I’m getting 250-290 miles out of a tank and it would be great to have a longer range between fill ups due to work.

can't argue with that. if you have the know how to swap tanks, maybe a look in the service manual would reveal technical knowledge on the bladder

euro version didn't get one, so there must be a way

I definitely have the mechanical know how just wondering if all the emissions from the Prius tank can be swapped to the corolla tank so no codes act up. All of the emissions stuff is on the outside of the tanks so it should work as far as I see.

This has potential to be a very interesting thread. I've actually debated taking the tank out of my 2007 spare parts car to see what would be involved in removing the bladder. Life would be much easier if an identical, non-bladder tank was already out there. What year corolla, Matrix or Pontiac Vibe were you looking at?

No smog checks in Florida. I could literally throw a big Cummins diesel in my Prius and Florida could care less. The bladder is there to make your life hell lol. Actually it’s to keep less vapor in the tank for emissions purposes.

Well the bladder can’t be removed without literally cutting the tank open so that’s a no go. 9th gen Corolla, 1st gen matrix and 1st gen vibe. Some of the matrix’s and vibes were AWD and the tanks are 11.9 gallons on AWD and 13.2 gallons on FWD. physically the tank is a direct bolt in on the Prius it’s just swapping all the emissions stuff and getting it to work.

The black tank is the Prius tank and the silver is the corolla, matrix and vibe tank. The electrical plug for the sending unit is different and there are two extra holes on the corners on the Prius tank. Other than that that’s all I see different.

Corolla tank is top Prius is bottom. As far as the emissions goes the Prius definitely has a lot more going on and the corolla not as much. The Prius emissions definitely needs to stay and just incorporate it with the corolla tank.

Me too. This could be epic, you can change the fuel pump on a Corrola without changing the entire tank.

I didn’t realize the Prius already had an access hole. Am interested to see if it lines up with the corolla fuel pump once installed

Have you tried filling up with the pump nozzle upside down? It worked wonders for me. Since I've adopted that technique mine never clicks off until at least 7-8 gallons in winter and close to 9-10 in summer. Worth trying before messing with a complicated solution. Unless complicated solution is what you really want, of course (not judging).

Saw this post a few months back. Definitely helped in my decision to tackle this project. It looks pretty complicated but it’s just like any other gas tank just a rubber bladder and a temp sensor is really the only difference. The project is still a few months out but just gathering info for now.
