New Toyota Corolla Hybrid revealed with a redesigned front

The report says it's based on the SE Asian Corolla (Corolla Altis?) and comes with a 1.5 litre engine (so probably the Yaris/Prius c setup).

China + Japan (and I guess Europe if you include the Auris) for Corolla Hybrid. SE Asia, Oceania and the Americas are the only places left that would warrant a Corolla Hybrid if Toyota so chooses.

    Auris Hybrid (E150 and E180) are 1.8.
This Corolla, as the japanese Axio, gets the 1.5.

In US Toyota sells 2 Corollas for every Prius. It make perfect sense to have hybrid option. Problem is 1.5 setup from C ain't gonna cut it in heavier car, and Gen3 is much bigger. They fitted it in Auris by freeing space taken by torsion beam suspension, but US Corolla won't get one b/c it will make it more expensive

I like the looks, I'm surprised they didn't put a giant grill on it.

Toyota needs to worry about Japanese jobs. There is not much room between the prius and the prius c (aqua) in terms of pricing and different customers. If you put the aqua's drive train in there it will be too slow, and won't sell in north america. If you put the gen IV prius drive train in there, and price it bellow the prius, then it will kill prius c sales.

If toyota puts a 1 kwh lithium battery in the car it should be small enough to just eat some trunk space. The gen IV is rumored to be designed for both nimh and lithium. Lower costs at the mississippi factory should lower costs of a corrolla hybrid versus prius c costs at japanese production.

I would love to see a hybrid Corolla in the US, 1.8 or 1.5 liter. Having a 2014 Corolla S (the Wife's) I can attest the trunk is huge, more than big enough to take the battery and normal cargo.

Under TNGA new platform, the Corolla should get the same 1.8L as the Prius.

This Corolla hybrid might be on the current (old) platform.

I was going mention the same. The front looks even nicer than the conventional model they picture below it in the link. A step in the right direction style-wise.

Well current Toyota Corolla has the same 1.8 as Gen3 running in Otto cycle. IMHO issue is with the battery pack

I don't know China's laws on vehicle taxes but it's possible the 1.5 litre was used if there was a tax on engine size.

The Corolla would use the Prius' 1.8HSD but so far only the CT uses it in North America. Toyota's been able to use the 2.5HSD in many applications without having the vehicles cross shopped. A Corolla Hybrid may help in the sense of those that want the fuel economy but maybe prefer a sedan like the Corolla.

However, Toyota sells a ton of Corollas (In Canada, nearly 4x more Corollas are sold than the 2nd best selling vehicle). It's on offer for 0% for 60 months easily with lease offers too ($100ish bi-weekly). We don't typically get deals that the U.S. gets (well our deals are not as ridiculous but they can be reasonable given our market) but the Corolla seems to be the exception.

In that case, it'll be hard to sell a Corolla Hybrid when its brethren are offered 0% financing.

China taxes all cars. THe lowest class is 1.6 L or less, a 1.7-2.0 liter a little more, taxes really go up over 2L. My guess is a 1.8L would get about $10 more in taxes, not enough for a design decision. It likely costs toyota less to dump the aqua drivetrain into the corolla, then put the larger motors and battery of the prius in there.

Well, it was only recently that safety moved into the top sixth priority for new car buyers.
I thought the cut off was 1.5. I heard that was why Ford has a 1.5 Ecoboost in addition to the 1.6. Perhaps in other markets.
