I'm a car nerd when it comes to safety and stuff like that. Found these unofficial pics of the new Prius crashed.

So what's idea of the cool looking circular black yellow tape? I guess they can measure the distances before after the crash test.

Ahhh, personally... I don't think there is anything cool about crash test pictures.

They just represent what would be... the worst day of my life!

The tape is just for visual assistance in seeing how different parts of the car move/behave during a crash. Actual measurements are done with a special device. Point to point measurements (base line) are taken before crash then after.

Have to say the new Prius did pretty well (which it should) considering its weight and short front end. Yay for computers and advanced steels.

This test will not buff out, for sure. The different camera perspectives are interesting.

^^^ wow the impact was hard enough to split the wheel in half. That's crazy

That is some of the testing the insurance industry does to help reduce the cost of claims by making cars safer. Full test results are at

The way the test is done, many car's front wheels are ripped violently from the car or torn in pieces. The point of impact is square on to the wheel. The aim of the test is to show how the structure of the vehicle is designed to keep the driver safe.

This shows that it's "almost" missed

This is a BMW X1 - the tyre was removed from the rim - you can see the rim in many pieces just beyond the tyre:

What I am really happy about is that the insurance companies are working to make the cars safer and the industry is paying attention because many buyers consider the tests when purchasing a vehicle. There is not much way to falsify these tests.

The full frontal crash (somewhat improbable in real life) is incredible to see. The passenger envelope does not appear to deform at all. The windshield does not even appear to be affected. The pole test (also unlikely as it is tested) seems to be the worst with respect to cabin deformation.
