Consumer Reports has a couple of interesting tidbits in their Prius Prime review today.

2017 Toyota Prius Prime First Drive - Consumer Reports

    A good sign:

In our hands, we actually observed a 28-mile pure-electric range without trying.

Not sure how they came to this as anything leaked out of Toyota so far suggests a lower starting price, so probably pure speculation:

Prices for the Toyota Prius Prime are expected to begin where a well-equipped Prius leaves off, about the mid-$30,000s.

Weird, so it has a Charge Depleting (CD) mode, a Charge Sustaining (CS) mode and a Charge Recovery (CR) mode. 28 miles in EV and the way they drive vehicles is pretty good. Probably didn't drive it on their track like all the other cars they test or use 5 drivers and count their avoidance maneuvers and 0 - 60 times as part of their mileage.

Not much new info but interesting and hard to believe any major design changes after CR gets a test copy.

I wonder when they got the car and wrote the article (eg; I wonder if the Fall release date has changed?). The article, if up to date, implies no changes in release date for USA.

    Yes.

There's EV Drive Mode, HV Mode and EV Auto Mode. There's also a mode to charge the battery on the highway like the Sonata PHEV and Panamera E-Hybrid.

Edited title for clarity (i.e. "Come read a news article", rather than "I have a question").

That works. Was hoping to use the consumer reports article to start a general conversation regarding EV range in the real world and any other sources of experience/data. I could have mentioned that in the OP.:)

Sure, but we can take CR and compare their reported range to how they drive other cars and what range they get and how that benchmarks to EPA, etc.

If CR drove their test vehicles like a hypermiler or bat-out-of-hell mode or in between, that gives us a useful EV range number.

true. i guess we'll have to wait until they can buy one and do some serious testing.

Did I tell you guys I rented a Prime too:rolleyes:...
sheesh truth is, I had trouble even renting a Gen3 in California...had to settle for a Cruze
...gimme a break ..."rented" a Prime! why didn't I call Toyota for a rental?

Given the NYC plates and the colour of the car, it's possible they took the NYIAS prototype out. (CR is in Connecticut, right?)

Well they said "without trying",so I guess they didn't hypermile it .
It will be rated with 50 Km EV-Range in Europe so I allways knew Toyota was understating it by saying it would have 22 miles electric range in the US .

Yep. They usually drive their test cars like they stole them. Normally they drive the test cars for 2,000 miles then put them on the test track.

Yeah I still remember the 44mpg on the Gen 3. However, they may have been a bit more careful given that it's a prototype. Maybe. The mechanics are probably relatively robust. I think it's just some interior trimmings may not be up to production standards, hence the prototype label.

Well, Hyundai claim 50 EV km on their Ioniq PHEV on their 8.9kw battery which adds up to around 31 miles. CR's 28 mile range is on par given that the Prime's battery is 8.8kw. Maybe Hyundai has more usable kw than Toyota. I think maybe the Prime's 22 EV mile range is also with AC or heater on full blast.

The 8.8kw vs. 8.9kw is too similar between the two. If the Ioniq is really 50 km, it is more likely the battery software limitation is more generous in allowing more of the cell's reserve before calling it quits. Toyota has always been conservative with their battery usage.

Like I said, the Hyundai probably has more usable range.

Toyota does appear to actually do the 5 cycle test.

Then The Ioniq is a smaller car, and likely light than the Prime. It's EV operation with the amount of ICE blending is unknown.
