Over on the PiP thread, member Okinawa has pointed out some Gen4 hints on p.30 of the April 2015 Consumer Reports:

CR says Toyota is being secretive about Gen4 Prius, but it's a "dramatic transformation" we should expect!
It will go on a new platform that a future CAMRY will also share.
    55 MPG is the target.
Choice of NiMH or Li batt is the rumor according to CR.
    On sale early 2016.

In other CR news, I noticed some of the used Gen2's seem to now have a black circle (bad mark) on the Electrical reliability. I assume that could be a combined effect of the HV batteries starting to fail, and the front display issue, which now has a 9-year warranty as noted by CR (on-line version). See this on p. 96 which only gives reliability data as far back as to 2009, but the 2009 gets a black mark on Electrical reliability and the 2010 and 2011 just get an Average rating on Electrical (but you can see the trend as they get older, this one category seems to get worse). On-line version somewhere they show it going back to 2004 or so on used Prius reliability.

Regardless, Prii over-all still get a top notch marks as recommended used and new cars (except for the Prius "c" as well as Nissan Leaf which CR says are not good enough on the small overlap crash test). In general, CR says "Just buy a Prius" has become their auto tester's cocktail-party refrain.

I didn't see any update on hybrid battery failure rates like they had last year in the 2014 on-line version. Also, in the face of lower gaso costs, CR went back to their old days showing calcs of how darn many years it takes to pay off the higher cost of a hybrid, but they did a little better job of saying why that is short-sighted than they used to.

    >>Sounds exciting re: Gen4. I wonder if the rumored Li batt option is a plug-in-lite feature (say 5-10 miles)?

are the prius and camry close enough in size to use the same platform? 55 mpg will not be exciting, but should keep the 2-3% buying.

No. So either the Prius is growing in size or the platform is flexible enough to accommodate different-sized vehicles. It's also possible that CR is mistaking the TNGA as one platform, rather than a series of next gen platforms. (Like the marketing name SkyActiv. It's not just one engine or platform, it's a host of new engines and platforms)

The Prius is now at the small end of mid-size, and it didn't change much in size going from 2nd to 3rd generation. Don't mistake platform sharing with the badge twins of old. The Camry and Avalon already share a platform. So does the Rav4 and Lexus NX, and all those models differ in size. The new platform could be designed to accomodate multiple size models.

55mpg is great. It isn't the 60mpg the overly hopeful want, but a 10% percent increase is what happened between all the other generations.

thanks, i just don't think it's enough to capture much of the gasser market. maybe depending on styling and other features and of course, price.

I don't think the gasser market will have much interest in a Prius either way. Improvements in other areas of the car will help, but the big gasser market is the (larger)mid-size sedan in the US. Which is already served by the Camry hybrid, and I don't think Toyota will make changes to the Prius that will mean it encroaching on the Camry's sales too much.

What would be exciting? A chintzier, more crappy to drive car that gets 60 something MPG instead?
You're already on the flatter part of the curve over 40 or so MPG (gallons y vs MPG x)

...... they also share it with the Highlander & the Lexus RX SUV's. They get a lot of bang for that platform.

True, but to expand Prius market share, they next one will need more fluff. 50mpg is already well ahead of the pack. I don't think getting to 60mpg will attract more buyers if the fluff level stays the same.

I do not subscribe to CR anymore, but IIRC the expanded table of reliability by major system has a little black triangle in each square that you can click for more details.

I wish that worked in the reliability section of the magazine version, which has been seriously dumbed down over the last couple of years.

What fluff stuff do you expect or want in the car? I know it might be hard since the last two Prius generations surprised us with the latest gizmos (SKS/bluetooth for 2nd Gen and DRCC/PCS/LKA and Solar Roof with 3rd Gen), some of which weren't available before or were at the cutting edge (the two other vehicles with bluetooth for 2004 were the 2004 Lexus LS430 and 2004 Acura RL)

I guess MPG 'are the car' when it comes to Prius, but that mostly appeals to hybrid / alternative car seekers,

I think it would be VERY interesting to know what other cars get cross-shopped when a Prius is on the buyers list or short list.

Let's say the other cars under consideration are Corolla, Camry, Civic, Accord, etc .... then the Prius needs to compete better with those others on price, performance, comfort, etc...

Hmm, the Prius would slightly edge out the Corolla and Civic in comfort (though the gap is considerably smaller than in 2004 as the latest iteration of each are impressive) but I would say a "triple no" when compared to the Camry or Accord. They're both cheaper, more powerful and more comfortable than the Prius. The Prius beats them only in utility, tech toys (though the Accord has essentially caught up) and mpg. As it stands in 2015, you basically have to want a Prius. If you're a non-car person that's just looking for the next family car, an Accord or Camry (4 cylinder or hybrid) will serve you better (unless the stroller doesn't fit in the trunk).

I was at Fremont Toyota at noon today and lemme tell you, there are just a train load of excess Prius liftbacks there. They have hundreds of cars, but the liftbacks were parked side by side all down the couple rows and on the end rows. It really appeared they are stacking up on the lot.

In contrast, so many Camry slots were empty. Camry is selling red hot now. Camry LE is about the same price as prius Two. Most people want the size, power and comfort of Camry over a Prius. Plus, trunked sedans are so popular in US. I would actually prefer a trunk: Easier to use than liftback for me. I have to pull the tonneau cover over every morning before going into work. I just don't have to have that extra cargo space except on rare occasion, but that's just me.

why don't the other cars need to compete with the prius on mpg's?
