Featured Conditions best for Eco, Normal and Power mode

there are no conditions that call for one mode or another. it's just an electronic device that requires more pedal travel to achieve the same acceleration in eco as normal, and normal as power.
eco does suppress heating and cooling though, to save some energy.

the coach understands that since you chose eco, you want to save energy. you can go faster if you want to.

 

On Gen 4, and I assume Prime, the Eco setting for the climate control can be controlled independent of driving mode.

 

99% of the time we keep our Prius' in ECO mode.

However there are times when we shift to PWR mode.
1-when there is an interstate on-ramp that is really short, giving you one 1 or 2 car lengths to get up to speed. The PWR gives you access to that 0-60 in 10.2 seconds.
2-when there are levees of fresh snow/sleet that you need to cross, PWR allows you to aggressively push through them better.
3-if you need to climb an embankment of ice. Disable the traction control system and shift to PWR may help to climb up the ice.

7 years of power/normal/eco mode accessibility, and it is still just as confusing for many as 'b mode'.

 

to "b" or not to "b" THAT is the question

 

'not' is the answer, unless you going down a long hill and the battery is full.

 

B mode is better on a long hill even when the battery is not full, for several reasons. First, it makes sure you don't inadvertently use the friction brakes. Second, it keeps your brake lights off so that a person behind you can tell the difference when you actually need to apply the brakes because of a traffic slow down. It's safer.

 

Curious about this. I realize this is a different model, but I have noticed on my Gen 3 that is takes a long time to heat up. I am running it in eco. Could that be the reason why?

Yes.

Eco drive mode
Suitable for driving that improves fuel economy by generating torque in response to accelerator pedal operations more smoothly than in normal mode.
When Eco drive mode is selected, the “ECO MODE” indicator will illuminate on the main display.
While the air conditioning is being used, the system automatically switches to air conditioning eco mode (→P. 490, 501), allowing for driving that leads to even better fuel economy.

Air conditioning eco mode
The air conditioning system is controlled with low fuel consumption prioritized such as reducing fan speed, etc.

 

and when toyota says 'air conditioning', they mean hvac.

 

Not to theadjack, but would it better to take it off eco mode when I first get in it to heat it up and then switch to eco? It takes a while to heat up.

certainly worth a try. keep in mind, it is limiting the water temp. so it's still going to take awhile to reach whatever temp eco limits, then go higher to the next limit. set the thermo on high.

 

well, there is no 'best choice'. just the most appropriate for you, and the driving situation.

if you look at the pedal travel chart that lee posted above, it's easy to see that you'll get more power sooner, without having to 'floor' it.

 

that's what it's all about!
