I would wait the 48 years. Battery performance will have abolished "range anxiety", and self-drive will be a real thing by then.

Seriously, our 2005 Honda CR-V 2.4L gets less than half the mpg of the 2012 Prius v in mixed use driving.

size matters. tank size. prius probably goes 5-500 miles. v would be less, no idea on civic.

 

Yeah, measuring fuel economy by how far you get on a tank is almost meaningless. If you're serious: note the distance travelled, and the amount of fuel required to refill the tank (fill till the pump shuts off, then stop), and do the math. Don't get drawn into "stretching" tanks, it's pointless.

 

I stop when my tank needs emptying, not when the car's tank needs filling. The car goes far longer than I do. Also goes far longer than it is wise for me to drive without a good stretch break.

No doubt the Prius gets superior mileage and of course it is a better car. But financial sense does not absolutely depend on fuel cost if you pay $5,000 to $10,000 more for the Prius or you don’t drive enough to make a real difference even if the price and current odometers are similar. Plus who knows what gas prices will be while you own the car. Around here we are seeing $2 a gallon again which makes paying a premium for mpg questionable. But if history repeats itself, and it always does, gas will be $4 or more as soon as we start dropping bombs again. So your economic forecasting has to be based on some unknowns. One thing history shows is that when gas prices go up, they go up fast and stay there for some time. Plus hybrid prices command much more than today’s pricing and supply goes way down. Bottom line, I would drive both and pick the one you like. A low mileage well priced 2017 Prius v would be high on my list for ride, capacity, technology etc. But if the 2016 civic gets 42 mpg on the highway you are not likely to do better without going plugin electric.

 

Don't know about 2066+ Civic, but my 2008 Civic Hybrid in it's prime got 45 mpg, now down to ~42 in summer ~38 in winter.

 

I believe for the v piston ring design improved for 2015+ and newer nimh battery improved for 2016+. Also no inverter recall for 2015+ which means you should be keeping more of your power when driving. Toyota will probably keep powering down older models to prevent damage to inverter.

I'm really enjoying driving in PWR mode and my last mpg hand calculated came to 51mpg mix highway and streets. I use EV when coming to a stop when I'm below 25mph and stay on EV when accelerating. I seem to get better mpg this way. I'm also using K&N engine air filter. I know there are lots of debate on that. But my engine has no MAF sensor issue and power is very obvious when driving at full acceleration. I need that sometimes. My v has no issue with power and acceleration what so ever and seeing 51mpg is a bit of a shocker. I am on nickel plated busbars but that may or may not have any affect on mpg. I have seen 51mpg before w/o npbb.
