Colision Body Panel Fit Specifications

    Hi all, please help me.

    My 2006 pristine Prius was hit over the rear wheel/door by someone running a red light.

    Repairs are reasonably well executed by Toyota dealership but I had to STRONGLY insist on new components and point out that Toyota Corporate web site will only honor warranty on non salvage parts - the Toyota shop was going to use salvage parts in clear violation of Toyota corporate statements on toyota.com. What I mean by reasonobly well is my 80 year old dad would have been happy with work - but paint overspray, clear coat bubling and a "new" rear door replacement which appears to come from New Orleans based on apparent rust bubling...

    Well the lower 10 inches under/behind the driver side rear door juts out about a 1/2 inch at the door edge and starts 4 inches forward from there. When i picked up the car on Friday the toyota body shop manager said they could simply align the door ( i dont see how physics could reform the door to the odd contour) - but i clearly see the door is aligned except for the bottom 10 inches where they seem to have not cleaned the pillar frame to correctly match the rear body panel to as new condition and cheeped out by tacking/gluing/welding over the bottom door frame.

    Honestly two things I am concerned about are resale value and wind noise on the highway and I did let them know up front my quality standards and pointed out the need to replace the centar pillar since it mated to the rear panel at the door edge. No doubt I checked replacement parts and did speak to the shop manager that this component needed to be replaced with new parts. They didnt wreck my car but they agreed to fix to "as new" and "under warranty" conditions.

    The Toyota repair shop agreed to "make right" this repair defect and any other items noted over the weekend - they suggested a door alignment would make me happy, but my eye tells me its aligned except for the mis-aplied lower section. The car goes goes back in to shop on Monday.

    Does anyone have a body fit tolerance specification they can post or email me? What i am looking for is to quote a reference tollerance of ___ milimeters and insist it be done correctly.

    If you can't post the spec I still want to know the tolerance numbers and then I can insist they photocopy the servce manual page __ to make me ok with accepting the repairs within said tolerance.

    hey Gal is the body shop repair manual available on the tech line for download? If they had a copy and took it in they'd shock the hell out of the Body Shop manager.

    Any comments of how "crappy' repair was will help with dimiished value claim. Unfortnately dimished value was struck down in satate of az.. So this is why repairs need to be enforced to a detail level. Sorry to push on repair shop but lengthy detialed conversations about body panels needeing to be replaced was conducted prior to them bending over to insurance co. Other shops willing to do work right were an option - they said they would do it correctly.

    You almost have to give them a chance to make it right by whatever means they suggest before you can complain it is a crappy repair job. I would let them do the door alignment, and then just check it very closely to make sure they havn't just tried to disquise the missalignment by splitting the difference between the front, back, top and bottom of the door, If they get it to the point that you cannot spot the missalignment and it looks just as good as the other side, then you shouldn't need body specks to measure things.

    But if it is not right the second time, I would take the case to your insurance company and rather than talk about diminished value which apparently is not viable in AZ, asked to have it redone by a reputable shop. Let your insurance company work out the problem with the shoddy repair shop.

    I think the Dimished Value thing is just an idea cooked up by car dealers to justify offering less on a trade. They tried to do that with me on my last trade, and I just told them, "Your shop did the work and guarenteed it!" Then, they shut up and gave me a good price for the trade.

    By the way, what are those ridges in the paint higher up on the wheel well that look like the clear vinal shield toward the bottom corner, but aren't? Did they paint up to a tape masking line to leave a ridge like that? It really does look like a botched up job to me.

    well, DH admittedly isn't a body guy, he's not aware of any specific tolerance numbers.

    however, that's a crap job. if they said they would make it to "as new" give them the opportunity. they need to give you a rental while doing so, as this is their fault. and if they still don't do it right, take it up with your insurance company

    sorry they screwed up your car and hope you get it right.

    Conclusion - they fixed the car to my high standards.

    I cant point at any issue now. When I returned the car and itemized the hit list they did gracefully appologize on not meeting their own quality standards, they supplied a rental car, and they did make 100% of the writeups right.

    Very pleased as acan be in the end.
