Yes. The most likely reason for that DTC is the coolant heat recovery system pump failed. Other possibilities would be that the CHRS relay failed or there is a problem with the associated wiring harness.

Good day I also have 2008 Prius with 75K that has a DTC 2601 on the first cold start of the day. I'll reset and it will stay off on many restarts the rest of the day until the next morning. I've removed and tested the CHRS relay It closes fine applying 12vdc to the coil contacts. I used my multimeter in the amp position across the relay contacts in the socket of that relay and it runs the recovery pump at 4.4 A and sounds good to me. I just switched another relay that had the same number in that same relay box to the CHRS position. So will see what that does but now I have to wait until another cold start. Any other ideas of components to test? Thanks

    1. Remove the radiator cap (must first remove the large black plastic panel over the radiator for access) and make sure the radiator is totally full. Also check the translucent overflow container and add fluid if needed. Use Toyota Super Long Life Coolant.

    2. Does the CHRS pump run upon shut down? If it does the relay is fine.

    3. Was the car in a front-end accident that would have damaged the CHRS canister located in the driver's side front fender?

Success no code on start up this AM. And I heard the pump run. That relay must have been working when warm but not cold. By the way the relay next to the CHS, the DRL NO 4/RR FOG has the same numbers so swapping relays like I did could be a part of trouble shooting this 2601 code. I didn't check all the relays in that box but they might all be the same. The relay tested closed using my ohm meter and applying 12vdc to the coil. Maybe it was always warm when I tested it anyway am glad you all are so helpful Thanks

I got this code also. I cleared it out when it first time appears and didn't come back in about 1 week with 400 miles driving. today, it came back again. I will let it on for a while to see whether it will disappear by itself. One interesting to mention is that the system EVAP was not ready in a week's driving (400 miles) before the P2601 code came back. Now, the EVAP became ready after the P2601 coming back. Note. I didn't feel any difference about the car with or without the code. The MPG of the car is great (see the screen of my last long trips IMG_2931.JPG IMG_2945.JPG IMG_2931.JPG IMG_2931.JPG IMG_2931.JPG IMG_2931.JPG ).

Have you looked at this thread?

    P2601 - Fixed | PriusChat

It appears 2 posters found compromised wiring right were the wires feed into the connector for the CHS pump. I'd take a quick look here before getting into any real troubleshooting. A clue that this is your issue would be reduced, random or lack of the CHS pump running at all. The only real problem with a Gen 2 CHS issue may be getting through state inspection in a CARB state, as you seem well aware with your observation of monitor readiness.

I read the all the messages on the P2601 - Fixed | PriusChat thread. We (my son) checked the wires to the pump, it was intact. Interesting thing is that no voltage was shown on our electric meter on the terminals of the pump relay. But I did hear some sound (for a 2 ~ 5 seconds) when the car was short down every time. Not sure the sound was for the brake hydraulic release or the CHRS pump. I will drive for a week to see whether this code will disappear by itself.
