So I first heard it last week but it got worse this morning. Half-shafts? Wheel bearings? 165,000 miles on original brake pads? I turned around and dropped the 03 Prius at the Firestone dealer and asked for a diagnosis: two lug nuts missing one lug nut finger loose Uph! Well we now know the nut responsible! Bob Wilson
Yea, it was me. I'd put the tires on the car a couple of months ago but apparently didn't do my "ugh" tug to perfect torque. Bob Wilson
I sent my son off once, with the front lug nuts just semi-tight, as much as you can do while the wheels are off the ground. It dawned on me 2-3 hours later, called him and he informally torqued them with the emergency wrench.
The only time I almost lost a wheel (it had to be replaced) was on my wife's 1966 mustang after a tire dealer installed new tires. I learned from that lesson to always torque the lugs. JeffD
If I remember correctly, I was 'racing' a rain storm at the time. Regardless, I probably need to 're-torque' the nuts as the Firestone staff probably left their air wrench on F-350, dually wheel setting. Don't need to have lug-nut shaped cracks in the wheel hub. Bob Wilson
[QUOTE="bwilson4web, post: 2160969, member: 10647"I probably need to 're-torque' the nuts[/QUOTE] Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure my owner's manual says with the aluminium wheels I should always retorque 1000 miles after having them off. I think I've hardly ever done that. Kind of makes me want to go take my torque wrench out there right now. -Chap
