Cleaned intake manifold and EGR pipe and it truly feels smoother!

I'm doing the same exact thing right now, nutzaboutbolts is a godsend. I'm going to upload some pics.

 

Yeah I've just cleaned ours, the intake manifold, same story: lots of oil, and grungy bits in the EGR passages. The MAP sensor (below throttle body was just SOAKED in oil. I removed it and cleaned by dipping in isopropyl alcohol, hopefully that's compatible, seems ok. Only 70K km's, but that oil was in there quite some time back, I noticed when doing an in situ throttle body clean, some time back.

I just carefully peeled off all gaskets, and reused. And did not disconnect throttle body coolant lines, just unbolted and lifted out of the way.

Also, installed an Oil Catch Can, between PCV valve and intake manifold. I'm hoping this will stop a return of the oil, time will tell.

I'm going to take on the EGR valve and cooler very soon, have a few necessary items coming.

And yeah: kudos to @NutzAboutBolts for the videos.

 

You could do it without the videos, but life is challenging enough.

The E8 torx socket and ratcheting wrenches are invaluable for the job. As someone whose done the job 3 times, you learn something each time you do it.

What a savage! Now you're just abusing the EGR and it doesn't like you touching it

 

The egr system was on 3 different Prii .

But each time I do the work, I make sure to talk nicely to the ingoing system.

Maybe @mmmodem will decide his is up next.

If it were just me, I'd agree. You want a real challenge, try swapping the cooler and valve with the windshield wiper cowling on. That can be real fiddly.

Good luck with your clean and replace work. Can't wait to see what a low mileage system looks like.

The more you do, the more experience you learn

 

When you have 2 kids and live 5 doors down from your inlaws, sometimes an excuse to be out in the garage is welcome.

But learning is something that is a nice side benefit.

 

Hey NUTZ, I want to thank you very much for your videos. So far I have changed my oil, transmission fluid, doing the whole EGR intake thing at the moment. I wish there was a person like you who also does F10 BMW 5 series in depth like you so I can save some big $$ on mine.

 

I soon will be in that predicament, but I don't know if I will have time to do any work in the garage. lol

I can get a 12 mm long socket plus extension on that hidden lower EGR nut, after a lot of strife, but so far getting a ratchet wrench locked on the end, or preassembling the whole thing and fishing it in there, nope.

Just practice, and I packed it in for the night. I'm hoping it's slightly easier with the cowl off.

Oh and my hands look almost as bad as @StarCaller's now.

 

Keep practicing . The ratcheting wrench is particularly handy for the lower rear nut on the cooler. An actual ratchet there will try your patience.

But patience is a virtue .

 

Managed it. Cracked it slightly looser for now.
