I haven't cleaned my backup camera lens for a long time until last night. This morning I was wowed by the clarity and sharpness of the backup camera image on the MFD, almost seemed like an upgrade from an old analog TV to a new HDTV!
I just wipe over it every time I wash my car. If you use those automatic car washes or just don't wash your car yeah, it sure does help to give it a wipe every now and then lol.
The positioning of the backup camera while almost ideal for the purpose of reversing is not at all ideal for keeping it'self clean. Although I make a habit of wiping the lens when I walk round the rear of the car, when ever I need to reverse during a trip I can guarantee the lens is dirty or wet or both. I have mused over the idea of some sort of self cleaning mechanism but as yet have not come up with a practical arrangement. An extension of the rear washer jet seems the most likely way but drying is then the problem, maybe a small spinning clear disc (boat fashion) could be the answer.
I wipe mine every time I walk past the rear end of the car. With our climate, this sort of attention is necessary. Tom
