It could mean almost anything, it's a very generic and not uncommon error.

You have to give us more information on any other warning/error lights, battery age/status, other specific driving conditions, error codes (DTCs), etc.

I've got "check hybrid system" close to half dozen times now, and yeah, it seems to be a catch-all alert, could be for anything.

One of the first times was after I got the recall for inverter software update: they told me the car was ready, and when I started it up got the message. They took it back for a few moments, and next time the message was gone.

All the other times, it was braking system related, accompanied by various traction control and brake warning lights, and brakes going into a sort of failsafe mode. The service manager now "thinks" there may be nothing mechanically wrong, that the issue is mess-up in the communication protocol.

    welcome!
did the dealer read any trouble codes?

    where are you located?
what is a 'hybrid prius active'?
what is a 59 plate vehicle?

is the battery intake grille clear?

Yeah second the trouble codes. If the system said "check hybrid system", there will be codes.

@Fizfaz is (now?) giving location as Birmingham, and "59 plate" vaguely rings a bell, some level or option package in Britain?

I think your dealer is just using you as an ATM.

The dealer should have scanned the car first, before just replacing parts.

When the Prius runs out of gas it switches to the battery mode, which without gasoline almost immediately runs out causing the Check Hybrid System light to go on. Fill up the tank to recalibrate the gas gauge and it should be good to go.

I just got Check Hybrid system light and i am driving fine with it and the next day I took it the dealership to see why the message is coming .. they are charging about $5000 repairs. please help me advice what is the point of going with hybrid.

    Is the dealer cheating,

Mileage is just 105K and for just saving Gas money I went to Prius hybrid. Now it is costing me 5000$ for repairs. I recommend there is no point of going with hybrid cars if the repairs of the AC Inverter so expensive.

I wonder if the ECU actually needed replacement?

A 2015 with 105K miles, it was determined to be out-of-warranty? What was the cut-off date/miles, did they say?

There's tires (2 sets of 4??), wheel alignment, brakes, coolant change (both), light bulbs, in that invoice, btw.

If the inverter truly needs to be replaced, you can save about $3k by going with a used one from a wrecker for a few hundred dollars. You would also have to find an independent mechanic capable of replacing it, if you cannot DIY. In fact, all of the other items listed on the work order, except the tires, alignment and brake pads (which may not even necessarily need to be done at this point) are easy to do yourself. Regarding the inverter, if you could find alternate transportation in case of failure, I believe you cannot lose by continuing to drive the car until it actually fails and then decide what to do. It sounds like you have not had much experience with dealer pricing. Generally, with an older car, you should really only take your car there as a last resort.
