I got a used 2014 Prius C on May, 2017 and I had had no real problems with it at all until yesterday when I was trying to turn thw car on to go to work the Check Hybrid System light started flashing and the card would not turn on. So i called the dealer and they sent a tow truck for the car. They inspected it and said that I had driven the car into a "very deep puddle" and water had gotten inside and some cables were malfunctioning. Now they are charging me $700 to get the car back...does this mean that everytime I drive in the rain this is whats gonna cpst me? And why does the warranty not cover it? Does anybody have any idea? I need help i really dont want to pay for driving my car in the rain. Inst that what theyre for? Anyway. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The puddle you'd have had to drive through would have been noticeable... You'd never forget you made the choice to drive through it. There may be cables malfunctioning, but I doubt it's from puddles being driven through.

What's your mileage? If you're still within warranty I think you have a good case. Maybe try a second dealership, and contact corporate Toyota. And let the first place know your intentions, that might change their tune.

Document all contacts, keep all the paperwork.

Prius c underside image, the orange conduit has the hybrid cables. Very exposed!

IMO you should never have your car towed to a dealer. What does the invoice for $700. say?

Regular Prius also has cables underneath, but behind continuous plastic panels.

Thanks you for replying and yes. Youre right. I made the choice to drive my car in the rain. Theres always gonna be puddles. I
Exactly. Plus, the rains wasnt even that heavy and there werent any HUGE puddles that could cause that much trouble. Thank you!

We thought towing the car to the dealer was the best choice since they had just done the check up last friday and we thought they would cover any repairs, but i guess we made the wrong decision. :(

Find out where the leak is. Seems rather odd that your driving condition caused such a major issue. The bottom of the car has to have been built to be water proof. I find it hard to believe that you drove through water and it caused a short. However, if a prior owner ran over something that pierced or cracked the plastic covering the wiring, then, a water issue would make sense.

+2. Knowing exactly what that $700 charge is for, and what your warranties are on the car, is important. For example, a physical breach of that orange conduit (from you or the previous owner driving over something) vs. a seal leak (which might be damage but also might be a materials defect) is important for any warranty claim.
