I have a 2000 Prius Classic. This morning the Check Engine light came on. We live 1/2 hour, 25 miles from the closest Prius mechanic. My husband tells me he's noticed the Prius "lurching" a bit recently.

My question is can I drive it 25 miles to the nearest mechanic? Or is that a Really Bad Idea?

    1. Check engine compartment fluids to ensure they are at the proper level.
    2. Drive the car in your neighborhood to see if you notice any driveability symptoms. "Lurching" may imply an engine misfire.
    3. If 1 and 2 are good and the check engine light is the only warning light on, then you can drive the car to your mechanic.

You might want to bring your cellphone with charged battery along in case you need to call for help/towing.
