Check engine light and Codes

    I have a 2005 and twice in the last week, I have had the check engine light come on. The first time my daughter was driving and she said she lost power after it came on. She stopped and restarted the car and was able to drive home. I checked the gas cap, and found it wasn't screwed on properly.The check light disappeared.

    Today I was driving and the check engine light came on for me. Almost as soon as it came on, I lost power and had to pull over. I checked the gas cap, and sure enough it wasn't screwed on tightly. Mea culpa!

    I called the dealership and they told me to drain some oil as I had had the oil changed within the last ten days. I did that, and the mechanic at the KwikKar ran an electronics check and he saw two codes, one which said that the throttle activator control was on high circuit, and the other said that the throttle activator control system was stuck open.

    Do you have any idea what is going on?

    Odometer reading?

    1. When you replace the fuel filler cap, turn it clockwise until you get at least one click.

    2. In a private msg, you indicated the DTC is P2103 and P2111. Both of these DTC are logged by the engine ECU and relate to the throttle motor. DTC P2103 means that the throttle control motor current is 10A or more (which is excessive and means the motor is bogged down) while DTC P2111 means that the throttle control motor is locked when the engine ECU orders the throttle to be opened.

    You need to have the throttle plate and throttle body interior cleaned. When the car is IG-OFF, remove the air cleaner cover, then look down into the throttle body interior. Try rotating the spring-loaded throttle plate shaft with your hand. You should be able to easily rotate this 90 degrees so the throttle plate can open and you can see into the intake manifold.

    If you cannot rotate the shaft, then you can either try to DIY by buying throttle body cleaner and spraying the interior of the throttle body and throttle plate to clean off the accumulated black gunk and lubricate the throttle shaft, or else you can have your Toyota dealer svc dept do that for you.

    While the air cleaner cover is off, remove the air filter and look at the bottom to see how much dirt has accumulated. Hold the filter up to sunlight, and if you cannot see light passing through, replace the filter.

    After cleaning off the throttle shaft and ensuring that it rotates freely, if you still have trouble with the check engine light coming on and the same DTC being logged, then you will have to replace the throttle motor. Good luck.

    I just had the throttle plate cleaned app 2 months ago. How much do you think a throttle motor would cost?

    I recommend you try to rotate the throttle shaft with your hand while the car is IG-OFF to see whether the shaft rotates freely or not.

    22030-21020 is the part number for the throttle body including motor. The part has an MSRP of $875 and costs $665 here plus shipping:
