Cheapest Tire for Prius

How much are they including delivery and installation?

I still think that the Integrities are a good value other than the annoyance value of having to replace them more often. Few if any tires allow MPGS as good.

 

I recently bought the General Altimax HP tires, which are top-rated on Tire Rack, for $56 each. They blow the low-rated stock Integrity tires out of the water performance-wise, although I lost 2-3 mpg from the higher rolling resistance. However I feel much safer in wet or icy weather with the General tires. These tires certainly have the best bang for the buck if you're looking for a safe, higher performance tire than stock. Plus they go up to a max of 51 PSI compared to 44 PSI for the stock tires.

 

One can get Nokian I3 tires for $66.70 each. A very good choice.

Cheap tyres normally aren't any cheaper in the long run. I use Michelin Energy XM1+ because I hate wasting money. They are not only hard wearing, provide reasonable grip but also have low rolling resistance.

 

I wish I could be of more help but I have been selling tires for a long time and still thinkg about what to put on when the OE Goodyears wear out. The Goodyears have 38000 miles on them and are going strong. Like the ride and the mileage so far is all is good. I will put the Michelin Primacy MXV4 and see how they work. We sell most of the brands and most are very good. If you go with the General I would say the RT would be a better match for the Prius and it is not directional and the HP is. You also will get a better mileage warranty.

 

I switched to Michelin Hydroedge a week ago. Too soon to tell about any mileage hit, but according to the mfd things are about the same and I am running them only 1 lb over the recommended pressure. The handling is amazing compared to the originals, including cross winds.

 

I just did tirerack and got the Goodyear Assurance TripleTreds in the 195/60 R15. I managed to find them on the site at approximately $93 each. I have driven in snow, slush, and sleet on them several times now and they are a much more competent tire and even more remarkable is the difference in braking. Since they are 80,000 mile tires they technically should cost about 1/2 cent per mile. Only had to pay $50 to get all 4 tires balanced and mounted.

If you want cheap tires just go to the tire store and ask what is the cheapest all season they have. In the long run you'll pay more (unless you are getting rid of it before the tires wear out).

I recommend the Falken Ziex ZE-912. This tire replaces the ZE-512 which I've used on my VW Jetta Wagon. It is a high-performance all-season and sticks really well. It also seems to be a low rolling resistance tire. I've had 4 sets on my Jetta and have been very happy with them. The ZE-512 lasts about 35K miles but the ZE-912 is a harder compound with a 60K mile warranty.

The last set of ZE-512's cost $196 for 4 tires shipped to my door and the local independent tire shop put them on for $20 with new valve stems. I've not priced the ZE-912.

The last time I decided to try to save some money and put some harder 80,000 mile tires on. My mileage dropped a consistent 2 mpg from 48 mpg to 46 mpg over the next 6 tanks.

We will be putting ZE-912's on the Prius when the Kumhos that came on it wear out.

My experience is that cheap tires are pennywise, and pound foolish. The cheap Firestone tires that were on my Saturn SL2 were contributory , along with the 300 second burst of rain, to me not being able to avoid being hit by an inexperienced driver 2 weeks after taking delivery of the car. I spotted the possibility of collision 100 yards way and went to full brakes from a speed well below the limit. Even with ABS, and even though it was not raining at the time of the collision, and even though I remembered to keep my foot down when the ABS kicked in, and even with counter steering to give more distance between me and the inexperienced driver. Even so, she drove right into the right front corner of my car. New Hydroedges stop the Saturn 2 car lengths shorter than new Firestone tires, on a wet road from 40 mph, and would have resulted in that accident being just a scary drive to work.

Saturn saving me $200 on the four tires on that car, cost the inexperienced driver's insurance company $2000, and me $500.

Considering that the Prius is heavier than a Saturn SL2, but uses the same tire size, I recommend the Michelin Hydroedges. I got mine at a one-free if buying 4 deal from Discount Tire.

 

i put the mxv4's on about 3,4 months ago.
i took a mileage hit - about 5 mpg -
but -
the handling on the michelins is much improved over the stock tires. especially in wet conditions - a massive handling improvement.
