I've just bought a 2010 Prius, but the previous owner only ever had one key, so I'm a bit concerned about losing it. He said he usually leaves the key at home and just carriers the fob, but even then I'm still not going to be able to start the car if I lose it. As I understand a cheaper-than-dealer option is a used fob, mini-vci cable, and 2-day Techstream subscription. That's still going to run about €2-300, for what effectively I want as a backup. I'm not really bothered about the spare fob having SKS, is there a cheaper way to pair one that will just start the ignition? If that's the only way does anyone know what fob I need for an EU model? The one I have only has lock/unlock and AC, where as most I see on eBay also have an emergency button.
No real answer for you, but as a word of warning....if anyone wants to sell you a used Prius without both fobs, insist on a discount to mitigate the cost of acquiring a spare key (or possibly having to have a new pair of fobs made). The car came with two, it should transfer owners with two.
welcome! can you elaborate? you have one metal door lock key that fits inside the fob, and one fob. and you want a second metal key?
bisco: I was looking for something that would start the car - I can easily get another key cut here but can't start it without the fob. I don't mind if the 'spare' fob doesn't work with the SKS to unlock the car, as long as I can start it. I asked my insurance and they said if I lose the key/fob they will cover replacement, and the deductible is less than what Toyota want for a new key/fob, so I'll just do that.
