Hello does anyone use charging stations available like at walmart, etc? They are not free in my area and I am considering get a pass to use them however, I am wondering how long it takes to get a full charge. The info I am finding on the website says 2-6 hours. That would not be worth it to me as I only have an hour for lunch and the nearest station is a couple blocks away from my work. I was hoping it would just take half hour like the 240v chargers. Does anyone know how long these types of charging stations take? thanks!! Tami
If it is L2 240v charger, a full charge takes about 1.5 hours. If it is partial, it could be 1/2 to an hour.
In an hour you can charge to about 7 or 8 miles. It takes about 1:40 to charge all the way, but it slows down by 75% 25-30 minutes before the charge finishes. So the last 40 minutes is really not worth the $1. If the station charges $1 per hour, thats the same cost of $6.25+/gal gasoline. Its also about $0.42 /kwh if you know what you pay at home, you can have something to compare that to.
How much do they charge? Many PIP owners have found that anytime you have to pay to charge the PIP- it's just not worth it due to the high cost to use the pay-for charging stations. Our utility charges us about 20 cents per kWh here (one of the highest rates in the USA) so a full recharge costs me about 65 cents at home....
Here are some samplings of charging times from Charge Point. Note that CP waits about 15 minutes of no charging before it decides that your car must be done. And in the last ~15 minutes of actual charging the PIP slows the charge to about half the rate. So, in about 75 minutes I typically get about 90% of a full charge. Another 15 min to get 100% and another 15 min for the CP to decide I'm done charging. kwh time kwh/(h-.25) 2.652099 1:41:43 1.84 1.449583 1:05:25 1.73 2.97298 1:50:13 1.87 2.41773 1:35:14 1.81 2.711671 1:40:12 1.91 2.876917 1:45:22 1.91 2.649831 1:40:14 1.87 2.879194 1:45:24 1.91 2.944225 1:45:22 1.95 2.698716 1:40:17 1.90 Mike
There are thousands of public EV charging stations in US according to Plugshare and numbers are still growing. You can find many nearest charging stations (including free) in plugshare site and it's not mandatory to install app.
Depends on how close the parking spot is or how much parking there is in the lot. Always good to have all options open.
