    Catalytic converter on our 2008 Prius needs replacement. Dealer has quoted $2300 which is out of budget. Are there other options in the Houston or Dallas/FW Texas area? Suggestions?

    Muffler shop? I had one replaced on a Nissan Frontier a few years back. Someone did a five finger discount on the original one, right in my driveway. They simply unbolted it. I never knew what happened until I went to start the truck up. Boy, was it loud. I found the shop which was in Humble, TX by doing a "google" search. Best of luck to you.

    Yes, they simply unbolted it and took it. I had no idea of the theft until I went to start the truck one day. It was very loud. Either someone wanted it to recycle for the precious metals inside or they needed one for their Frontier. Either way it was gone, and I never knew just when it was taken or who got it. Insurance covered the claim, less a $250 deductible. It cost a little under $500 for the repair. I sold the truck later to my former mechanic. Last time I saw him he was still driving it. That was a few years ago.

    I ordered a direct fit Cat and resonator assembly from Amazon (2008 Prius with 210,000 miles) several months ago due to the PO420 MIL and needed to get car inspected. In Louisiana, they wont even inspect the car if the MIL is on, unless you are expired. They will then issue a rejection sticker, which is good for 20 days, I think. The Cat I bought is made by Walker Automotive, and has a lifetime warranty. The Cat pipe (which is 2 converters- one small and one bigger), the resonator pipe, 2 donut gaskets, and replacement bolts totaled less that $500, with free shipping. Bolted up to my car precisely without welding-- the resonator and cat pipe are slip-fit. I used 2 U-bolts to join them. I cleared the code, and the light remains off to this day. We will have to see how this option stands the test of time!

    1. I'm actually thinking of going the same route. Been looking through Priuschat to see if someone bought Walker Cat Converter and how it's been holding up. How you had any problems with Walker yet?. Is your Prius still loud or is it louder than before your Cat Con needed to be replaced?.

    Do you have the part number or link to the actual part that you ordered? My Toyota dealership told me it would be $2200 just for the part. If I were still in Indiana, this wouldn't be an issue. But I moved to NC and they have vehicle inspection here.

    @toobz4this

    You can use a aftermarket replacement. I've replaced one in a 2005 and one on a 2006 this last week. They're available on ebay for a few hundred dollars. If you want to road trip to Columbia, I could help you out.
