I am 1 month away from buying a new prius and I was wondering if there is any chance to get the carpool sticker for CA.(I live in Los Angeles). The sales dude at the dealer said that the govt. might(again just possible) to issue another 10,000 stickers for people that already owna prius without a sticker...is it true? or the sales just try to get me into buying the car from him(though I am 99% convinced I will get one Thank you
It is extremely unlikely that more stickers will be approved, given the turning tide to retract them, and to convert carpool lanes into toll lanes in some areas of the country.
Unless the sales-dude has inside information from DMV and the California Legislature, he's just making something up. Ask him where he got the information. Printed articles and solid references, not just "I heard it from some guy." Pure BS.

Unfortunately, some of those links have expired, but it was a lively discussion. No one is really sure how Caltrans is going to handle the Federal Highway Administration's requirements, but it does seem unlikely that the state legislature will re-instate hybrid stickers until they come up with a solution.
HOV stickers are still available from the DMV - except for hybrids... You'd have to buy an electric or natural gas car, which can be found on websites like eBay, Craigslist, or http://www.cnginfo.com/.
