Just purchased a 2012 Prius a few weeks ago. Can anyone tell me if they preinstall a cabin air filter in the new cars?

Of course. Like the previous years, it is likely a charcoal filed filter. I found that out when I tried to wash it. :)

Yes, in vehicle. They recommend it should be checked or changed at 25-30K miles. Very easy to change. Located behind lower Glove Compartment.

Weird, I do not remember my original one being charcoal.

I have a few replacement ones from the dealer and I do not remember them being charcoal either, but I will check.

Replacement filter media is available with and without charcoal. OE Toyota filters do not have charcoal (at least for my 2004 Gen2). Third party ones cost less but those with charcoal tend to cost a bit more.

My OE cabin filter is charcoal and I bought a replacement recently to replace it, thank you.

So there was a change from Gen2 to Gen3 in the filter media.

My OEM cabin filter was not charcoal. I later replaced it with a Fram charcoal filter. The replacement Toyota filter at my dealership was not charcoal.

    @The Critic:

I was jokingly referring the time Spiderman posted a picture of how mudflaps do NOTHING for the car... And when you look at his car, it looks like someone threw mud all over it. So I jokingly refer to Spiderman's cabin filter is probably caked as well.

    You were right.

I checked my invoice and apparently my dealer decided to throw a non-charcoal filter in there at the complimentary 15k service.

The filter they installed looks completely different than the one which came in the car originally.

I think the interval is more like every 5K or 10K miles, isn't it? At 30K miles, that filter will be black.

Toyota only requires it every 30k.

Yer right, you clean it at 15 and replace at 30. I just replaced mine at 15 and 30.

I let one go in my Honda Odyssey, maybe 5 years, and it was totally disgusting. Sooty and black. Yech.

I just replaced my 2011 Cabin Filter with the charcoal replacement at 30k miles, which is part # 87139-YZZ10. The standard replacement is part # 87139-YZZ08 (Electrostatic filter).

For replacements under warranty, dealers are instructed to use 87139-07010 (High Efficiency Pollen). See the second section of the first attachment below for part number details (first section is for the engine air filter application chart). I think that this was the part number for the factory filter that was replaced, but I am not sure (I can look tonight). The factory filter definitely had many more pleats than the new charcoal replacement (roughly twice as many pleats).

The second attachment details Toyota's position on Cabin Filter replacement.

    Thanks,

    Jeff
