But seriously, no, there's no way to locate it electronically, so just keep looking. Good luck, they ARE expensive to replace.

Of course it's always in the last place you look. Why would you keep looking other places after you've found it?

 

They cost about $550 at the local dealer, here, programmed.

I got a brand new OEM one and programmed it, myself, for a lot less.

The problem is getting a Mongoose clone Techstream cable that works. Fortunately, I got mine to work on the second one.

 

Even though it's apparently NOT possible, that seems a good idea...., like phoning your misplaced cell phone.

Nothing to it. Just push the car from room to room until the dome light comes on. That means you're close.

 

I was thinking about this. I realized that unless you are Arnold Schwarzenegger, it may be inconvenient for you to push a small car around the house. Trying to fit a Prius into the bathroom is always difficult, even if it's the C model*. So here's an alternative.

I think you could make a DIY key fob detector. First go out and see if the dome light comes on when you approach the car with the remaining key fob. If yes, continue. If no, read up on how to turn on the Smart Key System.

In my Gen II, the key fob detector was a little plastic thing the size of a deck of playing cards. There was one buried under the center console and one tucked away back in the trunk. I'm going to assume your gen. III is similar. Find one of your detectors. Mine were bolted down by little brackets and had plugs connecting them to the wiring harness.

Once you find one, unbolt and unplug it so you can take it out of the car. Make yourself a wiring harness extender, say 3o meters long. You will want to plug the unit into your extender cord and the other end of the extender into the harness. Now coil up your harness, lie the sensor down about where it was and see if the dome light still comes on when you approach the car.

If it does, you're golden. If not try making the extender shorter or making one with a heavier gauge wire. If the sensor now works while plugged into your extender you can take it and walk around inside your house while a friend watches the dome light.

If you try this, please post back and tell us what you tried, even if it doesn't work. At 500 € apiece I think other people may be interested.
