I recently purchased my prius and would like to cancel my pre paid maintenance. I was told by the finance advisor that if I decide to cancel the plan, then they would refund me but the refund would go towards the principle towards my loan. What I would like to know is if I could get a check instead?

It sounds like you included the prepaid maintenance in your auto loan. No, you aren't going to be able to get a check.

How much did you pay for the plan?

I paid $1500. I plan to drive about 35k miles a year so I thought it would be a good deal. From what I'm reading on the forum, I think I'm better off just canceling.

Paying for the maintenance as you do it is the best way to go. Doing it yourself may be even better,

I did and got the check but it was on a used car auto loan, a 3rd party warranty, and within the 30 day time limit here in Texas. YMMV.

There's a difference between a pre-paid maintenance plan and an extended warranty. I've never heard of a $1,500 maintenance plan, so I assume you're talking about an extended warranty. At 35k/yr, even your standard warranty is going to be over around the 3-yr mark, so I think you're wise to cancel. Had I known how much we were going to drive our Prius, I might have opted out too. However, mine didn't cost that much, it included 4 yrs/75,000 miles of scheduled maintenance and 50% will be refunded if I don't use it.

As for getting a check, look at it from their perspective. You probably haven't made more than 1 payment, if any, so they'd be refunding money you haven't really paid yet. I cancelled a warranty back in 1999 on our old Montana van and also couldn't get a check for that very reason. Had you (or I) paid for the warranty separately, then a check would have been no problem.
