I have a 2005 Prius that came with one silver logo fob and has smart key functionality.

I was able to program the chip key that I bought from eBay ($34) after I came to know about it from this forum.

I have since then lost my only remote and have been able to use the car with my only chip key. I have to manually unlock the door and lock them.

The cost of new remote with programming is $350 from Toyota Dealership and $250 from locksmiths.

I purchased the Techstream software from eBay and was able to successfully connect to my car.

My question is, if I purchase the correct replacement fob with silver key logo - Part # 89994-47061, can I program it to my car using the Techstream software without needing my old fob?

And if someone has instructions or guidance to using Techstream to program the FOB.

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,

    BB

Programming SKS to a new key required an existing SKS key if you did it without Techstream. That's all I can say with certainty.

With the software I would think (but cannot confirm) that you'd need a master key that at least is fully functional in the slot to unlock the ECU without a full reset involving Toyota. I'd you can start the car, I think you're good.

Sorry, I don't have SKS:(-- but have you seen these? techstream sks - YouTube
I was able to use the "chicken dance" to get the wireless functions working on my non-SKS fobs, (Base model 2004) but 5 keys had been registered and so I got Techstream to wipe all but my original key, and then added the start (chip) function to the additional keys.

You generally wouldn't have the ability to program immobilziers because you need to be a registered member of NASTF (National Automotive Service Task Force) to gain access to key codes. You have to be a certified Locksmith or a qualified Service Technican that works in the security field. Not for DIYers.

The short answer is no. The longer answer is that you'll need a seed reset to register the SKS function on a new key if you don't already have an existing SKS function key. Locksmith or dealer function... $250 sounds high - see if you can find a Pop-A-Lock locksmith and check their price. Or if you can get to Art's Automotive in Berkeley, CA, I heard their price was $87 (+ a used fob?).

I believe this is old information. I've programmed transponder chips all keys lost to my ford f350 with forscan and i think people have done it with techstream on toyotas.

They aren't talking about the transponder (immobilizer) chip on a Ford. Or even the immobilizer on a Toyota. This case deals with the Smart Key System on the Prius.

If you have specific info on this system then please share and post sources. AFAIK, adding a (new) SKS fob requires an existing functional fob. Adding an used fob or dealing with a "all keys lost" scenario requires a "reseed" (special code entry) from a registered locksmith (or a questionable website). IDK if a dealer would do a reseed or try to sell new keys and a new ecu.

Yes, a dealer will do a reseed and will not require a new ECU, unless of course there are DTCs that indicate a faulty ECU. Not sure if there will be a problem adding back the existing key fob (I seem to think it can be done with a reseed), but obviously an "all keys lost" scenario will result in a new key fob being supplied by the dealer.

You can do this yourself you just have to purchase the seeds from a website. It took a little time to figure out but worked great. This should work just fine without any keys since you can reset all.

I copied this from an older reply to another member.

YES it is possible to register a used key purchased off ebay or other. You will need techstream and a seed passcode. I paid $25 for 5 keys(each key works forever on one car. I used LEXUS, SCION, TOYOTA PASSCODE CALCULATOR / GENERATOR: Calculate Pass-code by Seed number | Immobilizer Pincode Calculator (official website) and it generated a key instantly). I have 3 more if anyone wants to buy one for $5 each.

Once you get techstream with a cable and you have a Seed code you will need to reset the immobilizer codes. This puts the car into auto register mode and I just inserted one key into the slot and pushed power, then turned off and put the next key into the slot and hit power. This registered my old key and the new used key I found automatically.

Then you can go into smart key register and register the keys so the sks functions work as well as the wireless door locks/unlocks.

There is a few other ways to do this but it seems the most important thing with the used keys is just resetting the immobilizer keys. Im sure this will confuse alot of people but ill try and help anyone who is trying this.

    Thanks @Calimobber !
I did the same reset (after losing my last fob, also got a bunch of extra passcode calculator tokens ;)) but then, I failed to register my new key fob somehow (maybe it wasn't virgin?), a now my 2011 Prius with no fobs and a reset ECU is in Immobilized mode and won't turn ON, so I can't get Techstream to connect & get to the Smart Key Utility to register a fob!!

Any idea how to get Techstream to connect when the immo is in locked mode after a reset (and no fobs registered)??

Did you manage to get your's fixed? I've just accidentally bricked my 2013, bought the tokens mentioned above and got a passcode but when I first entered it in Techstream, it gave me the notice about it taking about 16 minutes to complete the reset and to connect a battery charger. I did that then it told me the passcode was not correct so now have a car sitting in the driveway with all the windows down and no way to put them up as I have no auxilliary power.

UPDATE: I just discovered that the car was not actually bricked at all. I had previously added a new key which I could not get to work with the proximity sensors, so I decided to remove it with the intention of re-registering it to see if that would help. I used the Erase utility in Techstream and although I only did it once, it removed two keys and left one which I assumed to be the other original key which did not come with the used car. I spent hours trying to figure out how to fix it and then found out that the new one was the one that was still registered. This allowed me to re-register the old one so I'm back to one fully functional key and one that at least sort of works.

I have a similar situation. I grabbed another prius yesterday with the sks. It's a 2004 but the only fob he had was a generic one that only starts the car when inserted. It doesn't even lock unlock the doors. So my thought was to buy a silver logo key to get the sks functions back but not sure I can program a silver logo fob while only having a generic basic fob. I do have techstream and a xhorse max pro tool(still leaning how to use it)

I have a 2005 as well so I am spoiled by not having to insert they key. Also I want to be able to lock unlock the doors via a fob

I've had to deal with keys a bit (including too many keys already programmed) and found the Autel MaxiAP does everything you need for a key, including the dealer "All Keys Lost" function. This latter will allow you to program a new key even if you lost them all.

I just did this on a Honda Ridgeline that was giving me (and Tom's keys) fits. Worked great.

The Autel Maxi AP is an OBD dongle that works with your phone to not only diagnose but also perform many dealer functions. You get one car maker with the cost of the dongle, others cost $21 per year.

Can't recommend this highly enough. With Tom's keys, they would have had me go back to the dealer ($$$$) to do the all keys lost process. You can yutube it to see how the different models of Autel deal with the keys.

    Hi Jeff!

It sounds like you've had success reprogramming the SKS key fobs with the MaxAP - is that the same as the "Autel MaxAP AP200"? I'm hoping this is the tool I'll need to reprogram my keys. My 2005 hit the limit of keys that can be registered/programed because of past replacements, so I need to erase the old ones, and then reprogram the 3 that we have - hoping I can do that without having to repalce all the fobs.

Not sure about gen3 but on gen2 you can connect techstream without the ignition on. It can access 4 ecus. One of them being the immobilizer. Not sure you can program a key but you can definitely pull data.

With an autel km100 key programmer you can definitely start it with the scanner and replace the keys in an 'all keys lost' situation

So Autel Maxi AP available on Amazon for $50 will allow me to program a new key?

Yes, subject to the same limits as Techstream.

For SKS, you still need a fully functional SKS key-fob that's already programmed to the car. You need a (new) SKS key that you want to add. You need available "slots" in the car's ecu (the max is 5 keys).

Anything else will require an "all keys lost" reset of the ecu (you would need to get a "seed code" - google that). Read the service manual for more details.

I used the Autel AP200 to add a new SKS key on my 2006.
