Cabin air filter is it free in the 25K checkup?

I don't know about the cabin airfilter but I was shocked that I got a new engine intake air filter free at my 20k mi. oil change.

 

I don't plan on replacing my cabin filter, unless it's so clogged that air won't pass through it. The owner's manual says to use compressed air to clean the cabin filter. So far, this has worked nicely for me, but I'm only at 25K. My filter still looks brand new.

 

I forgot one thing. Your oil filter definitely needs replacing every 10K miles. I think maybe this was the concern of your post.

 

I have changed my own cabin air filter but I have seen others on here say that the dealer will change the cabin air filter "for an additional fee".

If your dealer tells you this, you can change this yourself very easily. Search on here and there are some good instructions on here with pictures of how to change the filter. The filter at an auto store or WalMart is between $10 and $15.

 

Changing the cabin air filter was such a PITA for me I'm not sure I'm ever changing it again.

 

I was surprised that the dealer changed my cabin filter at no charge when I brought my 2010 for its 2nd free oil change @ 15K miles. I just brought it in @ 20K miles for one of the free tire rotations and they said the filter looked like it should be changed soon. He seemed befuddled when I said they just changed it 5K ago. He mentioned I must be riding on dusty roads (not). I know they changed it because I had to go back to the dealer as the glove compartment damper was not connected. You hit the button and the door dropped like a guilletine without the damper.

They asked when I pulled in if the wipers were OK . Not expecting them to cover the replacement cost, I said they were fair but not in desperate need of replacement if I was paying....again the replacced the at no charge...but not the rear. I thought mine were fine till I used the new ones. So far I'm pleased with the service from the dealer under the free package. I may even take it back for the oil changes when it runs out. Let the bottom oil cover flap fall off on their lift.

 

I replaced the filter with one from a local auto place and it did not filter the cabin. You can not clean them with compressed air. It is the carbon that filters the air.

I love working on cars. Replacing the filter is a 5 min job for me.

i am the tech manager at fram filters. We have a cabin Af for the your cars that has both carbon and arm and hammer baking soda in it for odor absorbtion. We also have installation instructions in the box and a web link to a installation video as well.

 

I never got free cabin filter even with the 30,000 major service, I just got the 45K service done. Its ridiculous for the dealer to be charging $ 69.99 for it. WHAT!!! .. the filter is $ 21 only, $ 49 labor?? for what??. Changing the cabin filter is very easy, can be done in 5 minutes. There are many videos on how to change it.

 

How much are they for?

 

Really ? It is a 5 minute job. Why was yours such a PITA?

Open glove box, drop linkage on right side, press on sides of glove box so stops clear the sides and the glove box comes out. Remove the cabin air filter cover and slide out the filter. Either clean or replace filter, re-install glove box, attach side linkage and close glove box.

 

Agreed. One of the easiest DIY maintenance items I've done.

 

I was a little suprised to see Toyota documentation with instruction to blow compressed air through filters in reverse. Mainly because Honda always cautions not to do that.

Could be just to sell more filters, but I think part of the rational, in particular with the engine air filter, is that you are cleaning the loose large particles, but not the stuff that's more deeply embedded. Also, blowing the filter out may migrate loose stuff around to the clean side.

 

had great link for cheap cabin/engine filters from place in Chicago that i could get by mail order. gave great discounts when buying lots of 3. any one have it? i cant find it.

i live in WA and pollen around here really clogs them up. so i try to change them out in June which is basically between the two major seasons we have here (trees verses weeds/grasses)

i had an extra set from my 2006 that i just sold, but they do not quite fit

 

thats only for the cabin air filter. Nobody says to do that with engine air filter.

 

Agreed - a simple change that takes less than 5 minutes!

 

My dealer just said they would change both filters for about $140. I always changed my own air filters when I had a non-hybrid. I'm sure it's not much harder, yes?

 

"Free" is not a word my dealership knows, except for a free "Hello," a "Thank you," and "We washed your car for free."

The engine air filter requires a 10mm wrench (or large phillips screw driver) to loosen the intake hose clamps to the left of it, unhook two clips on the front of the filter housing and a total of about 4 minutes of your time to remove and replace it. Could be 6 minutes if its your first time. Mine has been pristine clean for the first 16,000 miles, so I haven't swapped it for a new one yet. Same with the cabin air filter, and that also takes the same time to do it yourself. Detailed directions for changing the cabin air filter are in your owner's manual, and with diagrams. Be careful when you try to pry the glove compartment outward not to bugger out the clips. That plastic is somewhat easily broken.

 

If you can't change a cabin filter and an engine air filter ... you shouldn't be driving a car and you should have to give up your man card. Geesh ....
