    Hello. I've had Gen 3s, a C and just recently a Gen 1 which I just sold.

    Never a Gen 2, yet.

I looked at one today with 52k 2008.

Drove it but my concern is over the battery level as I drove it. I never once saw it go above 50%. I tried to get it up higher by hitting the brakes as I did in all my past Prii but still didn't go over that 50%.

I only drove it 10 mins in stop and go up to about 40 mph so do not know if enough to judge the battery. I seem to always recall the batteries in my other Prii going above that, like to 3/4 (rarely full) but I never saw that on my test ride.

Of course it would be best to have the SOC tested but I wanted some feedback from you guys here based on what I saw today as I drove it.

    Thanks much. G.

Being such low miles for 10 years old, you better save for a new battery. That being said, that 10 mins isn't a great judge, and I'd rather have the battery acting like that, then swing up to full every time you stop (like a failing battery). It's hard to find low mile gen 2, so I would buy it if you can swing a good deal. That battery might just need a little work out to get it back on track!

    Thanks Aaron.

I do remember that it swinging to full then dropping isn't a good sign.

When you say save for a new battery cause it's low miles, did you mean it will need a new battery soon cause of its age or low miles?

    He wants $6900 for it.

    Thnx for the reply. G.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I interpret the age and the low miles as two separate indications of battery trouble ahead. Age affects these batteries. Wear (usage) affects them also. A pattern of disuse can also hurt them.

A low odometer reading is okay if the car earned it a few miles per day. It's bad if it got all those miles on a roadtrip in 2012 and has been sitting ever since.

I'm still fairly new to the Prius but everything I've read here and elsewhere has led me to be skeptical of any Prius battery once it reaches 10 years of age.

Ok ok thanks. I understood the age and battery replacement possibilities but the low miles I didn't understand.

    But that makes sense.

    I can speak to this directly, because 1 year ago I bought a low-miles '08 for $7200.

The question I asked myself was, "Is this car worth $10.5k with a new battery?" i.e. $7200 for the car plus $3200 for a new battery (the max price).

The other question was "When the time comes, do I have $3200 to buy that battery?"

For me, the answer to both questions was "yes".

If you answer both of those questions in the affirmative, buy the car. If not, don't.

    Good input

I wish I could say yes to both but likely I'm passing on the car and try to find one where the battery was replaced.

Will likely be way more miles on it than the 50k or so than the one I'm looking at, but I'd get it if documentation shows a newer battery was put in.

If not, with my budget I may have to find an ICE car, which has been years since I had one of those. Sigh.

If you can find a $6900 Prius that comes with a new, dealer-installed, gen-u-wine Toyota battery, go for it!

But any other replacement battery would be a no-go for me. You have no real idea what you're getting.

Could you talk him down from 6900 to a price you would be comfortable with? People usually ask a higher price than they are willing to take.

On my way now to meet him at mechanic. Called Toyota to see if they'd test the battery. Wasn't too happy with their answer.

They said yes when a code pops up on the screen. Lol.

But I want to know now lol.

Right now I'm not anxious to buy it like yesterday so I'll throw out some numbers to him and mention the battery issue.

Thnx all above for the replies. G.

I don’t know why Toyota would say that. Techstream has a live EVBattery function that looks at the battery function. It can even record the numbers as you drive

No clue. That's what the tech told me. There's only one in my area unfortunately.

    Just returned from Firestone.
Needs 2 tires and serpentine belt.

The owner lowered the price a bit so I'll buy it.

Hey there, how are you. I remember in the past you have always helped with good replies for me on here, good to see you.

I will have to research what that means and what it entails but obviously battery related and in ads before on Craigslist I have seen them use the words reconditioning but no clue.

I'll research it. Thnx again. G.

Prolong is a way to maintain your hv battery and extend its life ;).

I use it and share ownership with 2 other members here. It helps with costs and using the equipment to help others:).

If you have any questions, ask away(y).

I wish I could do that. I don’t know too many Prius owners other than myself though. The way I figure it if I buy the prolong system and I don’t need it in the future. I could sell it here for more than 50% of what it costs.
