I know that Prius manual recommend DOT 3 oil change , but is it okay to use DOT 4 instead of DOT3 ? Or should I stick with DOT 3? Prius with 200K
Wikipedia says it's ok "if the elastomers in the system accept the borate compounds that raise the boiling point." I would avoid guessing about the elastomers, and just use DOT 3. If it were me, I'd probably even buy the fluid at the dealer, or at least check their price. I thought their engine oil would be overpriced, but it turned out not to be.
Thank you guys , will definitely call dealer . My dealer had deal last time , 42 dollar for oil change including labor and oil filter . I’m wondering how much a gallon of engine oil would cost at dealer. I normally use Mobil 1 ep or Mobil 1 high mileage
Agree, don't get clever, and to avoid any compatibility issues (real or not), just stick with Toyota brand I used Toyota DOT 3 fluid, purchased through dealership, for $7 something (CDN) per "pint". I bought two pints, which worked out. I'm getting liters of Toyota 0W20 in bulk at dealership for $4.90 (CDN) per. Bottled liters of same are about $6 now I think.
