I'm the loudest Prius in CT right now. My brakes doing that loud scraping sound. Is it normal to need brakes this soon? I baby my car so much and ride gently.

Ah, another one. The issue is rust build
up due to infrequent use of the friction brakes, likely on the rear.

The sure way to fix the problem is to resurface the rotors, but applying the brakes repeatedly in N will remove some of the rust and make the noise go away for a day or two.

Shine a flashlight in the rim and look at the pads. This is how a good set of pads look.

The disks are smooth also. Those are mine after 60K. If they had worn all the way to the clips you have issues. Most pads have a metal gauge that makes noise on the disc when the pads are worn. This might be your issue. It should not happen after 20K miles. Your calipers might be sticking like many posted above.

Thanks Judgeless. Appreciate the pic. I'm going to check tomorrow. Haven't had a chance to look carefully. I'll let you know what it's looking like.

His pads are fine and so are his calipers. All that he probably needs to do is make about 20 stops from 30 mph in neutral to clean up the rotors.

I have had something like this but hammering the brakes with hard use only stops it for a while.

What is the complete fix is to take the pads out and clean them up, clean up the shims and guide clips and put them back with fresh grease on the shims and guide clips.

This will also get your fuel consumption back to what it should be.

I had been getting only about 50-52 per UK gallon. (about 41-43 per US gallon)

After I fixed the noisy brake I was getting 55-58 per UK gallon. (about 45-48 per US gallon)

So I serviced the others pads, shims and guides as well.

I am now back to my normal old 62 per UK gallon. (about 51 per US gallon)

The job is not hard but hold the hex on the guide pin when undoing the front calliper bolts or you might damage the rubber covers.

The rear callipers have only one bolt and they then swing up to an slide back of the other guide pin. Then it is just clean everything up and be carful to put it back in the same place it came from. I still have old fashioned brake grease in my tool box, but it seems like Toyota use high temperature anti-seize compound.
