brake booster replacement

    I was told that my 2010 Pruis 2 brake booster system needed to be replaced after ABS warning lights came on and stayed. This replacement includes a cylinder and will cost $2500. The dealer is also saying that I need a new brake
    pump which will cost about $1000. He said that it didn't appear that there had been any leaking brake fluid but that this pump replacement was also part of the overall brake booster replacement. Does this sound correct? And has anyone had success in getting Toyota to pick up some of the cost since this repair was a recall and warranty enhancement on earlier models.

    welcome!

    unfortunately, since the extended warranty ran out, toyota has been reluctant to help. how many miles on her? would it make more sense to try and find someone who could install salvage parts?

    I hope you have not paid for this repair yet because Toyota has released an enhancement recall on the the brake booster pump and break booster assembly, its part of the service campaign ZJB. If you have already paid for the repair you can get a refund!!! Look into it, its a fairly new recall your dealership may not know about it yet.

    This just happened to me as well! No lights on the dash yet but they think it's the brake booster pump going out

    Have you had any success in having Toyota honor the Enhanced Warranty? I appealed with no success.

    honoring the enhanced warranty, or going beyond the enhanced warranty terms?

    i haven't read where anyone has been turned away if their car fits the terms

    I had absolutely no trouble getting the work done for free but this offer is rather old now, and will still cover some 2010 models but not all of them. It covered any mileage until November 2019 but after that point it only covered 2010 models up to 10 years “from first use”, or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. So unless it was extended at some point, it will now only cover those with less than 150,000 miles that are still within 10 years from their first day of use. Luckily it’s not build date but first day off use so still some time left for cars bought mid May 2010 or later.

    How is your new brake booster holding up, I see that it still does the whining/pressurizing after 2-4 brake pedal press (parked).

    My first clue that it was going out was a heavy hissing noise as I pushed the brake pedal. No lights initially. Eventually I’d get the lights occasionally but they’d reset before I got it in to the dealer. Eventually the lights were on usually, helped in part by quite a bit of mashing on the brake pedal to sped the failure along and keep the lights on to get it fixed. I wouldn’t advise it if you aren’t sure yours will be covered, but mashing the brakes repeatedly did speed the failure to the point the lights would stay on. I’d say the failure started occurring in my car several months before it got bad enough to keep the lights on long enough to get it fixed. You’d think they could just check codes, but the dealers I checked with mentioned the lights had to be on. I don’t remember if the document called for the lights to be on in order to qualify.

    I’d guess mine was replaced a year and a half ago, and I have put 80,000 miles on it since then with no issues. Mine just hissed, sounding like pressure releasing as I pushed them. They didn’t do it anymore after the repair. I can listen for the whining, pressurizing after pushing a few times but maybe that is normal and I haven’t noticed it. Looking at my cars service records it was unfortunately already replaced once at about 40,000 miles I think under a recall and then at 85,000 miles when it failed. So it only lasted 45,000 miles after the first replacement, but then I assume they updated the design. Either way, 80,000 miles on these new parts without the slightest hint of another failure coming.

    As for salvage parts mentioned, in total mine was a $4500 repair, over half labor if I recall correctly, so I’m glad they did it for free. I could look up the invoice if anyone needs to know for certain. It took them about 8 hours. I tried going the salvage route before I realized I could have it done free, and the independent repair shops looked at where the parts were are refused the work. They said take it to Toyota. lol I think they mentioned even if they replaced the parts, only toyota could do the programming. I’m not positive programming after was needed, but that was what was mentioned.

    Mine was just replaced few weeks back, I can't say that I confident yet just judging by the noises (no thumps/honk), but Everytime I press on the brake pedal, there is just a bit of hissing noise along, and every 2-3 brake pedal presses, I hear the booster comes on.

    I had the same symptom that you mention except with no lights but code was stored when it failed a month ago, I just feel the new one (doubting?) is hopefully not a reman unit by dealer.

    The 'campaign ZJB' document linked above applies only to 3rd generation Prius liftback and Prius Plug-in (PHV) cars, not to the v or the c. The end dates vary by model year:

    So it's already over for 2010s (unless anybody's got one that hasn't rolled 150k by now).

    For 2011s through 15s, it is still in force through August 2021 and then to your tenth year or 150k miles, whichever comes first.

    It is a replacement conditioned on specific failures ("certain internal malfunctions of the brake booster and brake booster pump assemblies"). It is good to remember that in the 3rd generation Prius, those are two different assemblies:

    There is a list of trouble codes that may mean the covered failure has occurred. They are codes that can also be set for other reasons. Sometimes a few simple steps of diagnosis will reveal that something else has caused the codes you have, and that replacement of one or even both these assemblies would not be the necessary solution.

    My 2013 Prius has been experiencing this issue. I took it to the local dealer, they acknowledged the brake booster was the root cause. However there was no warning light on. The dealer refused to replace the brake booster ONLY because the warning light was no on as mentioned in the Customer Support Program.

    Any suggestions or help?

    I was in same boat exactly, there was a honk noise and booster kept running continuously w/o having to depress brakes, as there were no lights they said nothing can be done. It eventually croaked with error codes but still with no lights. They said they could replace it under CSP.

    Now, different issue, since the replacement, it still cycles frequently (1-2 brake depress) but doesn't honk anymore.

    Check to see if there is any error codes and what is your symptoms?
