BOUGHT TOURING TODAY

So what did you pay for it? $1000 off sounds tempting enough to go for a touring, but then again 16" wheels means less mpg. heh...the trade offs of looking good!

 

I replaced my 05 with an 07 Touring last week. I've got a pretty good relationship with the salesman and he told me there hasn't been much demand for the Touring version. I only had to wait 2 weeks and got $500 off plus a really good trade in on the old car. He said if I had wanted a standard model it would have been about 3 months wait.
The extra cost of the Touring is only $270, and the handling improvements are well worth the cost. As far as MPG hits, I'm getting about the same MPG as I was on my old car when it was new, so it's really hard to tell. I'll let you know in 20,000 miles!

The touring edition has only been available for what - six weeks or so? It's a little early to give up on it.

 

OK, I have to ask: What's the big difference between the Touring edition and the standard Prius? I mean, besides larger wheels, tuned suspension (whatever that is), and HID headlights being standard? Or is that basically it?

 

I don't know the difference between the regular and the touring. I guess it's in the handling. So what if they do discontinue it? So what if the sales are not stellar? The Prius is the coolest car in the universe, and I doubt the touring edition is that much different.

You got a fantastic car. $1,000 off MSRP is a great deal on a Prius. You didn't get conned unless you cannot afford the price you paid. (But if you got $1,000 off a previously-inflated price that was $2,000 above MSRP, then you got conned.)

Touring or regular, you're going to absolutely love your new car. Enjoy!

I'm just jealous that you got something off the MSRP. I got nothing off, but I also know it wasn't marked up either, and I got a good price for my trade.

Also, has a extended spoiler in the rear.
$270 diff on the higher optioned models, $2000 diff on like the #2's.
$1000 off it is nice..maybe at that location the tourings aren't selling as well..?

Where did this fallacy come from? The wheel/tire factor regarding MPG would be the Revolutions/Mile of the wheel assemblies including the tires. The Touring Prius provides Bridgestone Turanza tires [P195/55R16 86V] which have almost the same Revs/Mile as the "stock" Integrities on the "standard" Prius - meaning virtually the same MPG. The Bridgestones have a 3-year Platinum warranty followed by a 70,000 mile tread-wear warranty and are rated to 149 MPH (I suppose you could get a Prius to 149 MPH by loading it into a helicopter).

When you price a fully-equipped standard Prius to the Touring Edition (Package 6, Options A0 and P4), you will find there is a $270 difference (Houston distributer area - 5 states). I believe the tires alone are worth that difference.

My 2007 touring will arrive within the next few days... about 2½ weeks from my purchase agreement.

 

If I bought a new Prius today I would settle for nothing less than the Touring Edition. The Touring Edition should be the standard Prius. Better tires and suspension will make it a safer better driving car. As previously stated the tires will be the same circumference and the extra cm of width will not effect mileage much if at all.

Do you mean the "footprint?" - that is, the square inches of tread actually in contact with the road surface. I believe the maintained tire pressure would have more effect and a larger footprint would have a marginal MPG effect... just my opinion.

Agreed. According to Japanese MPG data, the touring edition has a slight MPG drop when compared to the standard model. In fact, some Japanese Touring "hypermilers" switch to the 15 inch rims to get back the lost MPG. It's probably due to the rolling resistance which is greater on a larger rim, and perhaps also increased unsprung weight due to the larger rim and larger tires.

I don't see any more rolling resistance with my Touring edition. My 2004 would drop .2 or .4 MPG from cold start, before I could get my MPG back up. My 2007 does not drop down unless I continue to accelerate to much. I do not have enough mileage yet to swear by it. But, I have also noticed the MPG does not drop or increase as quick or often as my old Prius. I seem to go much farther before a changes shows to the MPG. The touring is gliding with less acceleration than before on same streets I travel to work and back. I feel the MPG has to be better.

I am really impressed with all the performance of this car. It rides and handles better. What ever tuned suspension is I like it.

 

I am a new Touring edition Prius owner...and do not have a comparison to earlier models because this is my first ride/drive in a Prius. I love the handling of my car and continue to hope for better mileage as the car "loosens" up over time. I have gone from 36 MPG on the first tank to 40 MPG on the third tank. (I'm learning how to pulse and glide I guess). I feel safe in my car and if the handling of the touring edition is better than the regular Prius...I vote for the touring edition. The exhaust is just as clean...and my addiction to foreign oil is less than what it was before I bought my car. Long live the Prius!
