Both Prius and Tesla motor technology

I thought the new-car features manual suggested that the Prius Prime's motor–generator was a hybrid dual internal permanent magnet (IPM)/induction motor, which uses an induction cage in addition to the internal permanent magnets inside the rotor. This would be a step-up over the simple IPM Tesla motor–generator, as hybrid dual IPM/induction motors have a higher efficiency (97% vs. 95%) and a much higher power factor (99% vs. 86%). It was probably a typo and they meant "core" instead of "coil" in the drawing for the rotor cross section. See my excerpt.

Yeah, that looks like a typo. It's a PMSM, but they did dip the magnets into that V shape between Gen 1 and Gen 2, to get the advantage of the reluctance torque the video describes.

 

Neat early article by Toyota engineers about motor developments between the Gen 0 (1997 Japanese) Prius and the Gen 1, already goes into this some. Figure 13 should look familiar.
