Hi guys. I've had my gen 2 now for about 4months. So far I've added a parallel pack for capacity and yes I know the Prius doesn't recognize the extra capacity. What it does do is never run the battery fan and the volts never drop below 200V when the soc is low. I could build a battery tap emulator to spoof the battery ecu but I noticed in other posts the BMSplus or 2 from Hybrid interfaces.. Problem that I see is the website no longer exists.. So can you still get a bms+ Or are there alternatives? I've notice one guy built a HSI indicator using an arduino. I've worked a little with the arduino but I'm no pro with it.. Surely with so many Gen 2's out there modding them and parts other then the few overly expensive plug in kits companies out there that something still exists for defeating coloumb counting... Clint
Well one negative is that adds a bunch of extra weight to the car which reduces mpg and loss of luggage space.
My 8Ahr weighs less than 10kg. My main pack fan never runs. My battery volts float between a low of 210 and a high of 235 and share half the amps discharge. My testing of my stock cells revealed a capacity of about 4500mah or 2000mah short of original capacity. I would love to replace the stock pack with what I've got but it's charge rate is only 2C so more packs would cure that issue but yes you are right.. More weight.. More capacity Longer electric range. At least Toyota got that with the gen 3
not much. at least, i didn't find the gen 3 to have more capacity than the gen 2. you really need a plug in. @Jason in OZ might be able to help, not sure. all the best!
What kind of pack do you have a second factory pack? Did you ever find a BMS or substitute and what did your setup cost? I am so interested in extending the range of EV. I have a 2008 I bought a month ago. I wired EV only to the hi beam switch. I love pulsing and gliding around parking lots and I love that I can move the car out of my driveway without ICE starting. I also like it for moving from one store to another or really short trips pulsing and regenerating at slow speeds. Would love to double that EV range or just see the battery last a bit longer. I try to keep it above 53% SOC when I do this otherwise if you go lower I notice it takes a very long time for the SOC to recover and the engine runs more etc. I'm running Torque app to monitor everything. I've also been wondering would there be any benefit to a cold are ram air type setup to keep the colder outside air flowing to the back seat battery intake. Cooler battery pack more efficient?
Sadly no one has replied to a Bms + alternative. You could mess around forever in a day to become proficient at building an arduino can sniffer and learn how to intercept messages or alter them. The easiest solution I can see is battery tap emulation. I have 14 X 4S multistar 8000mah batteries in parallel. This alone adds no extra battery range. Coloumb counting keeps the extra capacity out of use. Using the emulator you can cheat the ecu into battery spoofing.. I am now looking at building a big 18650 pack of around 66ah at pack volts. No contactors. Just charge the whole parallel pack. Lie to the ecu and when the true packs volts get low dissengage the emulator to show true pack voltage and switch off spoofing to run normal.
As for cool batteries. The Prius management looks at cell temp to protect them.. Too hot and the fan runs and current is limited in and out of the battery. Too cold and battery performance suffers as well. The parallel pack deals with half of the load so the stock pack never gets hot enough to run the fan anymore. Using torque you can set on a different page for super highway mode.. Works well 70-85km/hr ice rpm ign timing. Your goal is to keep it at 1200rpm and 14deg btdc 1184rpm and 16-17deg btdc is the cusp of ice turning off. Something new to play with..
depending on where in oz you are, you are welcome to come look at my car... ive just been down the rather costly and lengthy process of installing a PIS system with an extra 10kwh pack. the car gets around 55-65 km in pure ev mode with zero ice running. or around 170km in blended mode at better than 2.5L per 100km.
