Block heater source?

I'd say a group buy woudl be a great thing! i definately would want to figure out the install and everything while it's still warm up here...

 

The website of the Canadian parts dealer is now gone. The installation is easy. And I agree, a group buy is a must! DANNY!?!

Since it is a dealer installed option in Canada, you might email various dealers there & see if they will send you one. From the Toyota Canada's website: http://www.toyota.ca/cgi-bin/WebObjects/WW...anguage=english It is only $147 CDN which used to be about $0.02 in US dollars before the dollar went in the toilet. Someone in the northern US would be able to drive to Canada and get one installed. A bit of a drive from Bahstahn but doable.

Are you positive you don't want to pay a visit to your friendly neighbor north of bawston? Canadian Toyota dealers are used to replacing block heaters, I'd trust that a lot more than a dealer in the U.S that has never done one

AFAIK the heater - btw it's NOT a coolant heater - is the same for the Echo

I've had a look at the one for the Matrix and it looks the same only difference I could see was the cord length. But with out my calipers to measure it I won't say it's exactly the same. My parts guy can get them for the Prius.

 

I too cannot find the Canadian Toyota block heater part on the internet. I've even emailed several Canadian Toyota parts dealers and none of them will respond to my request. Most likely they do not have them or perhaps the anti-American problem is more serious than I realize!

My local Toyota dealer here in Colorado does have a block heater available in his parts book but it is a third party heater that is the coolant heater type. It requires the removal of a freeze plug and this brass unit is the coffee pot style heater element that installs in the open freeze plug and heats the coolant in the engine block. I would prefer the Toyota part over the third party but may have to settle for the coolant heater. The cost of this third party heater seems to be in line with the Toyota part, about $67 US.

If someone has a source for the Toyota part, please post here on PriusChat.com for those of us unable to locate them. Thank you.

Indeed I can get them. They come from a separate company endorsed by Toyota to supply this and other items like this that Toyota has chosen not stock any longer. I sell them for $33.00 plus freight. It does take about 2-3 weeks from order time to get to your door. I cannot guarantee that they will show up in "Genuine Toyota Parts" packaging or contain installation instructions, but they are endorsed by Toyota for the Prius. Hey Guys,

Under what temperature conditions is this heater necessary? I live in So. Cal. and temps rarely get below 40 on the worst winter nights.

However, I do park outside and so the engine gets much cooler then it would in my garage.

You mean +40 F or -40 F?? I suppose any temperature below the normal operating temperature of the gasoline motor, there is benefit to having a block heater warm things up. Given your location and climate, I think it would be a very noble deed to install the heater.

There just wouldn't be any benefit or payback

In theory I don't need a block heater either, as the condo I live in has heated underground parking, and at work the office building also has heated underground parking. However, the block heater came with the car, and when I go out to the hobby farm I park in an insulated but usually unheated detached shop/garage
