"The Clinton Climate Initiative is working with some of the world's largest cities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," Clinton said in an announcement. "I'm happy to have a fuel efficient vehicle to do my part and I'd like to thank the Ford Motor Company for this."

The Mariner Hybrid, a slightly more luxurious version of the small Ford Escape Hybrid, gets an EPA-estimated 32 miles to the gallon in the city and 29 on the highway. (Unlike other cars, hybrid vehicles are often rated higher for city driving than highway.) It runs on a four-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor.

The Mariner Hybrid is the first hybrid vehicle and the first Mercury vehicle outfitted for presidential use, an honor normally associated with Ford's more expensive Lincoln brand and General Motors' Cadillac.

Good for him! I would like to see lots more influential people placing money where their mouths are and reducing their carbon footprint.

Good for Bill, although I think he would do better with a Prius, but I suppose he felt compelled to by American. On a somewhat related topic - does anyone know what Al Gore drives?

Sounds cool. I bet with the armor plating and bulletproof tires and glass the thing barely gets 20, though.

I love the part in his movie where he shows glaciers calving ice off into the ocean. Does he know that if his theory is right glaciers would not be calving ice off into the ocean? LOL! Glaciers are supposed to be shrinking aren't they?!? If their shrinking how is it then that the ice is still flowing to the ocean and calving off?

Hypocrisy at it's best. I guess thats liberal science for you, they get to have it both ways.

I'm led to believe that he was interested in a Toyota hybrid, but wasn't absolutely convinced that Toyogard would be effective protection for the upholstery!

I'm not sure what you are referring to about glaciers "supposed to be shrinking". I've read the book "An Inconvient Truth" and Gore's agruments and evidence are pretty compelling. Also, USA Today printed a correction on the article you reference in your post. Here's some information on the correction ... http://thinkprogress.org/2006/08/22/gore-smear/ Here's another link.... http://www.desmogblog.com/hoover-institute...-art-of-slander

It seems that the author, Peter Schweizer, works for the Hoover Institute which is funded in part by Exxon Mobil. Rather than discredit the evidence that Gore presents in the movie and book Schweizer attacks Gore personally by implying that he is a hypocrite. Rather than debate Al Gore I think folks would be better served looking at the messages and issues concerning global warming. Even President Bush now admits that global warming is a serious problem. What is at issue is the impact that us humans have on the problem. In part that's why I bought my Prius; essentially to "walk the talk".

Psst....don't look now, but your ignorance is showing...
    http://www.scienceagogo.com/news/200411080...trunc_sys.shtml
    from the above linked page....
" The increase in speed comes at a time when the floating ice near the glacier's calving front has shown some unusual behavior. Despite its relative stability from the 1950s through the 1990s, the glacier's ice tongue began to break apart in 2000, leading to almost complete disintegration in 2003. The tongue's thinning and break up likely reduced its restraining effects on the ice behind it, as several speed increases coincided with losses of sections of the ice tongue as it broke up. Recent NASA-funded research in the Antarctic Peninsula showed similar increases in glacier flow following the Larson B ice shelf break-up.

btw, your post has no relevance to the thread subject...please start a new thread if you'd like to discuss the physical dynamics of glaciers as it relates to global warming.

When Gore was on Larry King a couple months ago, he said he drove a Lexus, but didn't specify which model. He also mentioned that several people in his family had Prius'.

Put your brain in higher hear and try to grasp the following concept: could it be that one of the reasons why they are shrinking is because they are calving ice off into the ocean? After all, every piece of ice that falls into the ocean is not belonging to the glacier anymore, right?.

And would it perhaps be possible that ice is simulateously melting and breaking down, so that pieces fall into the ocean? Or is there some law of physics that says that ice can't melt and break at the same time?

Yes, I know that these are very advanced thoughts. If necessary, perhaps you should try to use some ice to cool your brain while thinking about this. :D

So Clinton is getting a hybrid. Note the end of the CNN article, "The vehicle was donated by Ford Motor Co. to the Department of Homeland Security."

What would he have bought if it was his money?

That's certainly hard to say, but the bottom line is he wouldn't have purchased anything anyway. He's going to need a bullet-proof secure vehicle. If you read the article it discusses the usual cars used by such dignitaries and none come even close to the Mariner for FE. As I understood the story Clintons specifically asked for a hybrid....had he kept his mouth shut they'd have just given him the usual black suburban and we wouldn't even have this discussion.

Why do we have to look for the bad in stuff like this?
