I've had my '05 for a bit over a week now. I've noticed that, while it never drops below "half-full", my battery meter has also never shown a full charge.

    Should it?

I questioned that for the first few weeks i had my 05, the battery will show full from time to time, i saw it for the first time after a long down hill trip with a lot of re-gen charging the batt. keep in mind if your batt were to stay fully charged you would have no where to store the extra power from your re-gen brakes. what a waist. and as for batt in the RED. i have only seen it twice, and both times i had run out of fuel. and was creeping into a gas station. oh well live and learn.

Enjoy the Prius Life. OH what a wonderful feeling.

Congratulations on your Prius. Hope you're having fun.

Since getting Priapus in mid-August, I have never seen a FULL battery. It's been up to FULL - 1 a few times. Evan has pointed out a few times that the battery level indicator is actually a small window into the overall state of charge (SOC) for the battery. In other words, you are not shown 0 - 100% SOC but rather more like 40 - 60%.

If you really, really want to see a full SOC, I suggest driving exclusively downhill and coasting. That's not possible for me because my commute is uphill both ways with a head-wind through three feet of snow and I only have slick tires. :)

I thought it was 20%-80%?? Could be wrong of course, leaky sieve for a memory.

I have gotton all green on occasion under 'regular' conditions. Generally downhill, MPH not too high but can't do auto EV due to traffic. Slow enough that the engine drives the wheels and has plenty left over to charge the battery. Then I hit the 1.5 mile highway which ends at the bottom of a hill, sometimes regen to the signal will put in that last green bar.

Also, when it is really cold, the engine doesn't shut off. I have started the morning at 9 green and watched it charge to full green while I waited at a red light. Soon after, I get on the highway, no engine shut off there, more charging.

That is one of the reasons I wanted the EV switch. Without using EV I always have at least 7 bars when I pull into my driveway, frequently 9 green. Last night I made the 3/4 mile from the major road downhill to my house starting at 8 blue ending at 7 blue. EV all the way without having to be super gentle on the accelerator fearing the engine will start. In those cases, once it started it was REALLY loath to go back to EV as I have to slow with the brakes to make a corner.

I have seen 2 pink bars twice, both times this week while testing my new EV switch. It cuts out of EV when it gets to 2 pink. I don't intend to EV that hard as there is always an up to follow the down. :) I was seeing how far it would go on the places it figured it would save me gas. I'd rather not have it pulling out of a '2 pink' battery to climb the next hill.

How do you get 9 green bars? There's only 8 bars to show. Red 1-2 Blue 3-6 green 7-8

Never got 8 bars, but sometimes it seems to get to 7 green for no reason. Not complaining though.

This brings up an old issue for me. I always get green bars. I'd say even on highway trips I have one shy of full green about 70% of the time. Seems like the older the car gets the more time I get green bars. Car now has 28,000 on it.

I have almost 12K, and I too am seeing more green. Also seeing mileage seeming to fluctuate. Same road, same traffic, same general ambient temperature, and in can be 1-4 MPG different.

But then, it may just seem that way. I may be misjudging the conditions.

Easy, just move to Winnipeg. At -35 C, the motor rarely shuts down in city traffic and the SOC will always be one bar away from the top.

Wheh, Jayman. I'm glad you said -35C. 'Cause if you'd have said -40C I don't know if I'd have been able to do the convertion. :-D

    HAHA!

When I'm feeling like a smart a**, and somebody asks me if I mean C or F, I respond "First one, then the other!"

    BTW: -35 C = too d*** cold
