Folks on this forum say that there is no user serviceable traction battery filter for the gen5 prius prime. And me looking at the rear passenger footwells seems to confirm that, as no vents appear to be there, on either side. (Although, interestingly, the current rav4 prime does have such a filter on one side.)

But then I look at this toyota service manual and it seems to contradict this (see image below). So I am a bit confused. What am I missing here?

Generic service manual for several models, not just the prius prime.
Can you find that filter on your Gen5 Prius Prime ?

I've shaken-out the filters on my gen4 Prime several times already. They're never dirty, but if you've pets riding with you - they could get dirty.

That might be a filter for the onboard charger. IIRC, a part diagram showed it having venting, and it sits under the rear seat.

No, per the OP, it's not in our gen5 prime. Or certainly not in the place shown in the manual image.

I totally understand the generic manual situation, but this page is specifically labeled prius prime. Which makes this all quite puzzling.

But that isn't 'specifically labelled' - every page fetched says Prius Prime, right? Model-specific information is marked with model codes.

And even then they won't bother necessarily for an entire section. There's an implicit 'if present' on all entire sections.

I'd only find this puzzling if it was in a wider context where there would need to be a 'this isn't always present' indication. Like a parts diagram, wiring diagram or wider disassembly procedure.

I'm not going to comment on the Gen 5 prime, but the Gen 4 Primes battery pack air inlet grilles are located up between the rear seat back rests and the rear doors ( both sides ).
Gen 4 also has an inlet below the back seat near the floor providing air circulation for the hybrid battery charger on the passenger side. AMDs CarCareNut youtube channel has a video showing how to remove the grilles and clean the filter (if it needs cleaning).

I didn't know about those filters until I saw that video a year or two ago.

Don't worry too much about having trouble understanding the manuals, It takes a while to figure out some of the ways they are cross referenced.

It is with refrigerant, and I believe outside the cabin space.

    Why there isn't one.
The manual page cited seems to be in error.

The Gen5 Traction Battery is liquid (refrigerant) cooled and heated. The Traction battery charger may be air cooled with a fan. I could not find an air duct or filter for the Traction Battery Charger air cooling fan.

Toyota uses the same repair manual for both the Prius and Prius Prime(or PHV). The reason is says Prius Prime in the 'Model' section is because that's what was selected when the user searched for the repair manual. If you search using Prius, it will say Prius; if you search using Prius Prime, it will say Prius Prime. But both searches take you to the same document.

If there are major differences between the two models, there will be subsections for each. For example: HV Battery(for HEV Model) vs. HV Battery(for PHEV Model). But the repair manual doesn't bother to do that for the Maintenance section.

In short, the battery filter pictured is for the hybrid that has the battery under the rear seat.
