Just curious. Did your car come with an owner's manual?

The colors simply make it easier to see the 3 different levels, rather than having to always count bars.

    For example...

Right. But as a very minor point, I think that I saw some picture indicating that the "Low" battery level is purple in the '06.

Some 04 & 05 owners thought that for their's too. But between the settings on the Multi-Display itself and the effects of that type of photography, the appearance varies quite a bit.

I read somewhere that the fully charged level (green) shown is about 70% of the battery charge and the low end (pink or purple) is about 40%. Don't worry about the levels as the Prius does a good job of keeping the charge in the right region. If you see pink or purple bars, no need to worry.

I give "john1701a" an A+ and a :) for the response with pictures.

I give "IsrAmeriPrius" an F and a :( for a pretty useless response. Who needs a manual when they have the world of PC?

That was actually a good response for Isr what ever his name is. He's usually not this polite! <_<

Originally, I thought his response - though lacking in grace and civility - is rather accurate and humurous. But then I whipped out my manual.

Keeping in mind that I'm referencing a 2004 manual, I can't find where the battery charge levels are explained in detail but I did immediately find an explination of the arrows in the very front of the manual starting on page 9 of the 2004 manual.

Also yes, it's true that one of the secrets to battery longevity is that they never fully charge nor do they never fully discharge. Consider the MFD a "window" of about 40% charge to 60% charge. I'm sure John1701a has the actual numbers on his website: http://www.john1701a.com

    [edit]
I mistyped John's URL and have since changed it. I had put John1024 instead of John1701 because - believe it or not - I'd been working with powers of two and binary all evening. 1024 is 2 to the 10th power; I'm such a nerd.

There's one other battery color you might see — WHITE. This battery color shows up when you're in Ig-On mode (two brakeless pushes of the power button).
