The maintenance needed alert came on yesterday on 2013 Prius. We stopped and had the OBD read and it said the battery was overheating at 185 degrees. We checked the fan which did not need cleaning and still overheating. Nearest Toyota shop for diagnostic is 40 miles. Should we have it towed? Is that temperature likely to ruin the battery if it isn't already? We need to do something tomorrow.

Lol... They're gonna rob you for a fortune even though nothing is wrong with your car... Whoever did the OBD reading got it wrong and confused the engine coolant temperature with battery temperature. If your hybrid battery was running that hot all the tops of the cells would have blown off and car would smell to bad to drive.

More to the point the "maintenance needed" light is designed to turn itself on every 5000K to remind you to get an oil change.

THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR CAR!!!

Here's how to turn the light off:

That's what we're here for!!! Now tell your girlfriend to find a friend or family member who knows how to work on cars to be the person who helps with repairs via this website. That way in the future, she'll continue to save money!
