I was asked if the batteries in my extra fobs will run down even if the fobs are in a drawer well removed from the car. Should the batteries be removed if the fobs are not being used? I'm almost up to three years and the batteries are still near full charge.

    :) Bob...

I, too, went over 2½ years on my 2004 fob batteries with no apparent weakness in the fob functions. Since the 2032 batteries are inexpensive and easy to find, and should a fob battery lose power at an inconvenient time you could simply place the fob in its slot, it seems unnecessary to be overly concerned. My #2 fob was in a desk drawer and when I occasionally used it, the batteries stayed powerful after nearly 3 years since the car's manufacture date.

I plan a fairly long trip over the Christmas/New Year's holidays in my new 2007 Touring Edition Prius and will wrap my spare fob in heavy foil and keep in my luggage as an emergency backup - or perhaps in a metal box like the Altoids mints box - neat fit.

Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS and PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR !!

Charles: Thanks for the response. You'll probably have to remove the batteries from the extra fob you intend to carry in an Altoids box in your suitcase. I tried the exact thing and it didn't work. The fob signal was strong enough that the SKS system would not lock the car with the extra fob inside. One small drawback to an otherwise nifty option. The flip side of this is that it's virtually impossible to lock your key inside the car.

MC and HNY to you too.
