Pg 102 of the 2005 manual...

Headlights and turn signals with automatic light control system - do I have this on a 2005 pkg #6 or is this something that is on cars other than in the US? I am still overwhelmed with all the gagets on this car. When reading the manual I don't always know if a feature is or is not on the US models. I grather that this feature sets the headlights to come on automatically at night or on a cloudy day?

Also just did my first solo drive (since driving it home on Monday). The sun was out and I noticed glare off of the dash board - big time, impacting my view through the windshield. It was very distracting. Anyway to cut down on the reflective glare other than driving on a cloudy day?

I think the auto on headlights are not available in the U.S. although Canada has them. But we have something that I think is just as good, auto off headlights. You can leave your headlight switch on all the time, when you have the car off (power button pushed off) and open the drivers door the headlights go off. When you power the car back on again the lights come on. In the winter I have just been leaving my headlight switch on.

Does Canada really have the automatic headlights? I though they had daytime driving lights... which in my opinion is even better. Maybe they have both DDL and AH which would be best.

If I understand correctly, the daytime driving lights use less power than keeping the headlights on full intensity. This of course saves fuel. Since you are using the lights to improve your visibility to other drivers... rather than illuminating the road... the lower power DDL has essentially the same safety benefits as keeping the headlights on.

I am not possitive, but I don't think the 2005's have the auto-off headlights. I think that it is new for 2006's.

You are correct DRL are required in Canada ans they operate as you have stated.

I leave my lights on all the time and have had to replace both halogen units, The right lasted 20 months and the left lasted 22 months.

    Wish we had DRL too.

My 05 has auto off headlights, I assumed they all did but I can't verify that.

Really? I am surprised that the headlight auto off feature was not mentioned on the list that is taped to the car at the dealership, 05's that is. Yes, i know I ended a sentence with a preposition.

    In Toyota terms,

    Auto-Off: Automatic Headlight Cancel System
Auto Headlights: Automatic Light Control System

Do you recall seeing the first one?

the auto-off feature is one that I really don't think is all that important and can catch you with a dead 12volt battery if your the type of person who opens the door before shutting off the car, when you have the headlights on. The sequence to proper useage is shut off car then open the door, that shuts off the headlights. I really wonder how many of the "my 12volt battery died" complaints are related to this.

I checked the "auto off" feature on my lights the other day, and they shut off whether I open the door first or turn the power off first. I normally hit the power button first, then open the door, but after opening the door and then shutting off the power, the lights were also off. The 97 Camry I traded in also worked that way. My wife's '05 Camry's lights turn off on a timer after turning the ignition off.

I realize it's possible to just leave the lights on and that they will go off automatically when the car is powered off and I open the driver's door. But that still doesn't handle light adjustments on the display and dash. Also, as noted in this thread, the headlights burn out prematurely.

Has anyone done an aftermarket install of the auto-headlight feature?

After getting to the end of this topic, I was disappointed to find that there were no responses to this question, which interests me very much. I'd like either an aftermarket or dealer installation of this feature: is it possible, and has anyone done it?

My owners manual (2007) has instructions for the automatic headlight "if equipped", but the vehicle switch has no auto position. I would love to update this function. <_< Frankly, I was surprised it wasn't there... 2007 Touring with package #6, i.e. fully loaded. California, USA.

    It's for Canadian vehicles.

You don't see us complaining "the manual said HID for headlights.... our bulbs look like halogens"

I too get caught by this. I have not tested this overnight, but have come out much later and found the lights on if I did not open the driver door AFTER powering down.

I have a dashboard cover, which removes the glare.

I also was disappointed. I would like a real auto-on-off headlight system for the car. Has anyone retrofitted this? (I would also like rain-sensitive wipers and for the blue-tooth to automatically pair with the phone currently in the car (assuming a previous pairing) instead of specific phone it is set to pair with)

I'd be happy if the wipers would just return to their off position when you turned off the car instead of just stopping in the middle of the window.
