Are they expanding the PIP availability?

...see my other post, GA has $5000 incentive on BEV+ $7500 Federal so that is probably Leaf story.
Not sure about PiP but come to VA and snag one.

 

I have yet to see another PiP here but I do get questions quite often.

I think it's about time to expand. The price has come to a point where I could see this competing with the regular Prius in a few years if it was rolled out nationwide. I ended up paying the same price as a regular Prius or less.

 

I've owned mine for almost 9 months now and have yet to see another anywhere...even in a car lot...even when I bought mine I didn't see another (and I check out every Prius I see).

 

I had someone ask me at the gas station why I have 2 gas doors.....

 

Shortly after getting mine, someone at church was curious enough to look behind the right side "gas" door and didn't close it all the way.

 

Watch for confusion, then recognition, while filling up. I've only had someone point out the plug-port once, but the speed at which he identified it was impressive... especially in a state where there still are PIP available yet.

 

The Georgia $5000 EV tax credit in the news today...it's under fire for being too much. Chelsea Sexton input was they should consider reduce it and extent also to PHEV. Go Chelsea.

Just saw a Toyota dealer in Vegas advertising the Pip.

 

Toyota doesn't really want to sell the PIP in all 50 states. They don't enjoy producing a PHEV, because they don't like battery electric vehicles (BEVs). They sell them in states where doing so helps them to earn "zero emissions credits" so don't look for them elsewhere unless and until more states adopt the California type emissions standards, including the requirement for some Zero Emissions Vehicles (ZEVs).

PIP is pointless in Ohio. Too many old coal fired power plants in the mix.

 

Actually that is not totally true, it is still an advantage to the owner in terms of saving money on gas. Many owners don't buy more than a tank full a year. I bought mine in December last year, and I filled it up on my way home from Maryland about 100 miles from home, and I haven't bought gas since; and my gas gauge is only down two pips today. My cost per mile on electric is about 2.5 to 3 cents per mile in this (super cold) winter. In my 2010 Prius i would be getting around 30 to 40 mpg at best on short trips around town and costing $3.60/35 miles = 10 to 12 cents per mile.
I'm loving it every time I see these gas company bandits raise the price of gas by 30 cents at a time on Thursday afternoon. My gas station revenge is my 2014 Prius plug-in.

 

I talked to Toyota corporate about this and they wouldn't say what their rationale was in limiting the availability and at this time they're evaluating - which means get lost and stop calling us.

I would have purchased a PiP but it's not available in PA and according to my dealer although I could purchase one through them (they'd trade for it with another dealer) some of the regional hold-backs are not transferred to states that aren't authorized. This would make the PiP more expensive since my dealer wouldn't get the hold-backs (the out of state dealer would keep it). It's available in all the surrounding states but not PA.

Not sure if I believe that but my dealer is a pretty good guy and I ended up getting a 2013 Prius Type V.

But I was a perfect candidate since my daily commute is about 12 miles round trip - I could do that probably on one charge.

 

Lot's of PA/CA/FL folks went to MD to get their PiP's in late 2012 when we had the great deals. It seemed like some MD dealers were very experienced selling cars to out-of-staters with all the discounts, 0% etc. Other dealers were not authorized or allowed to pass on the discounts to out-of-staters.

That can only be partially true because some of the PiP roll-out states (eg; VA) are not CARB. I agree PiP roll-out states approximate the CARB list of states but several exceptions. VA had been a power-house of Prius sales...I don't know if that is still true because our free single occupant HOV access was reduced in 2011.

P.S.- My theory was the PiP's might all be CA-certified versions that Toyota may not want to sell to too many outside of CARB, but who knows. They never tell us anything over here on PriusChat.

My local dealer in Columbus Ohio told me the same thing. He was going to get me a PIP (even made a deposit), but when I started talking to the dealer in Baltimore and found out I could get the $1000 off and 0% financing, plus save shipping cost to Columbus I decided to bite the bullet and go out of state. I talked to my local dealer and he even encouraged me to go ahead, further he told me not to worry, they would service it and take good care of me anyway.

 

I wonder how much profit new-car sales are expected to make at dealeerships as opposed to getting you regularly into their service department. The sale is one-time, but the service is a recurring source of revenue.

 

Doesn't everyone? I analyze every Prius to see if its a pip and then look for mods

 

First two years service is free, 2yrs/25000 miles.

 

i wonder how many people return to the dealer after that period
I'm on the last the service right now( 25000 miles). Im 100% SURE that i won't be returning to any Toyota service half the reason being that i own my own mechanic shop and the other half is terrible service. Every time i take my Lexus' in they are amazing

 

I look for Gen2 or 3 and VA HOV plate logo left, middle, or right this tells me what I need to know, I am pretty bad seeing the rare PiP's but when I do it's from MD. I wonder if Toyota's idea of making VA a PiP roll-out state made sense. Tons of Prii though.
