    Nice Ray!!

My first "all April" tank wasn't as good as I'd have hoped for as warm as it was, but I had 2 big Ozarks highway round trips with speeds averageing over 55mph that were about 1:30-1:45 each way (i.e. 6 1/2 hours of highway driving on the tank.) Once I started my usual commute the mileage started climbing from the 51.4 after those trips up to about 54.1 on the MFD.

Calculated, however, the 394 miles came to 52.3mpg. Still brought my average up slightly, but I'd hoped to be above 55mph for this and the remainder of the Spring, Summer, and early Fall.

    Thanks Doc-
Did you have the family with you on the highway trips. It sure makes a difference to have a full car doesn't it?

My first guess gauge bar dropped off at exactly 200 miles. It won't be a great tank in the end as I'm driving to the drag race championships in Houston. 380 mile round trip at 75 mph will pretty much toast the numbers on this tank and into the next.

Yea, you guessed it. At least the 2 longer legs were all 5 people in the car, the 2 shorter legs were 3 of us (albeit one was the baby). The longer legs had luggage and bicycles and a wife and kids not wanting to sweat so we had AC on the entire way!!

Still, I'm not complaining, just didn't start the month quite as great as I'd hoped.

    Total Miles: 5667
    Tank MPG: 40.4

I never got 9.8 gallons in the tank before - and the gas station wanted the money all at once! Maybe my bladder is stretching for the season (or we finally got that groundhog out of there lol).

I've had my Prius for about 3 weeks and got 44.7 miles on this April tankful. I'm more in love with this car each time I drive it!

Can the moderator please merge this thread with the one of the same name begun by BigFire? [I couldn't post this there for some reason.]

    And make it sticky ;)

    Thanks

First tank with my 02 Prius.

    Miles: 427
    Gallons: 9.2
    Calculated MPG: 46.1
    Indicated MPG: 49.7

Not sure why the 3.6MPG disparity, possibly I didn't top it off after I picked up the car on Saturday. But when I tried to top it off today it only took an additional .2 gallons, and the 3.6MPG difference would equate to about .8 gallons of gas.

Second April tank- 660 miles at 58.0 MPG.

On this last tank I drove 250 miles to the drag races. There was a 150 mile stretch of interstate. I started it at 58.8 MPG and was ready to watch the average melt like it usually does. It started to but when it had gotten down to 58.1, I found a flat bed 18 wheeler with a big air dam in front and got behind him. I maintained a one second following distance which is not all that close. The flat bed allowed me to see around him pretty well. He drove 77 mph, a speed at which I usually average around 42 mph. After 120 miles of this my average had improved to 58.3! It was not difficult driving to follow this guy and he made no indication that it annoyed him. I'm sure some truckers would not like it but they draft each other all the time and I could always see both his mirrors. Your mileage may vary.

We are in Fairfax and have not yet filled the tank with gasoline. Our purchase was 27th March and we are mid-way in our first tank (in the car at purchase).
    efusco,
"luggage and bicycles" caught my eye.
We would like to haul three (or two) bicycles but have not obtained any bike rack. We still have the one we used over the rear bumper on our 1992 VW Golf 4-door that we just sold. I am interested in very specific details of your bicycle-hauling device/method. We have a Pkg#2 Silver.

I must be driving too much because I'm half way through my second tank and I only bought the car 9 days ago. lol I commute from Manassas to Falls Church every day, so that is 60miles x 7 days or 420/week plus litle trips. Wow! I never thought about how much I drive, I should get a life....

Sorry to mislead you there, but the bicycles were very small bikes for my 5 year olds that fit neatly into the hatch area with the back seat in the upright position.

If you go to john1701a.com's site he has some info on the bike rack that he uses as he's also an avid biker. Coastaletech.com sells a hitch assembly for Prius that allows for a hitch mounted bike rack. There are probably other options as well, but it is not something I have personal experience with.

    Re: April 2005 MPG Averages

Edited- was in a hurry to get back to my experiments from lunch while making the original post.

Haven't gone through one full tank of gas yet this month, but here's the current stats for my black beauty.

    2nd tank ever
    Last fillup: $20.75 (March 27)
    Current miles on tank: 392
Gas gauge just dropped down to 1 bar
    MFD mileage display: 43.1 mpg
-my commute is only 2.5 miles
-we drove to the airport on hwy 40, about 20 miles, traffic at 75 mph, with 3 people in the car

Not bad for the circumstances and still getting acquainted with my new toy.

Driver's commute in Fairfax / Burke is (round trip) 5.5 miles
We did drive to Woodbridge (VA) Sunday afternoon to deliver our old car 1992 VW Golf mileage 141,365 at the start of the drive. A family agreed to take and use it.

    April tank #1:
    ODO reading: ~47MPG
MFD reading: ~49MPG (consistently ~2 MPG more optimistic)
    347 miles
    2/3 freeway driving @ 65-70 MPH
    Temps in the 50-70's
4700 Miles total driving to date (3 months time)
