ApplePlay - could it work this way with an Android phone ?

    Okay, I might be way out in left field with this idea, but could it work ?

    First let me say we plan on getting a 2020 Prius Prime XLE around May of 2020 and I am hoping by that time maybe Toyota will surprise us with Android-Auto availability, but if not...…...

    We use Android phones and prefer to stick with Android, but if we bought an inexpensive refurbished older model of an iPhone without a sim card and connected it to the internet via WIFI thru using our Android phone as a WIFI hotspot, would the iPhone still work with ApplePlay connected that way ?
    (the iPhone would be connected to the Prime's USB port as required)

    Yes it would work as long as it was connected with a cable and had internet (WiFi would work).

    Yup. Note an iPod Touch is an iPhone without a SIM card so you could also look for those.

    IIRC, the iPod touch only has A-GPS and not full GPS as in cellular enabled iPhones. So navigation reliability may be impacted. Other apps like streaming should not be affected.

    Thanks for all the replies, I have seen refurbished iPhones as low as about $80 so it would not be a major expense to get just for that purpose.

    ……..of course I am still hoping for Android-Auto by May of 2020 !
