Today I was able to activate a ChargePoint station with my iPhone 6 and release the charging handle, even though the actual, physical credit card I was using did not have an RFID/NFC symbol. The station itself was a "free" station, and I was appropriately not charged a transaction. At the time of authorization the iPhone said was charged a $1 fee, which was reversed in 15 seconds.
