Just curious if anyone had a Gen2 Prius or passed on a Gen2 because they didn't like it and now have a Gen3 they like a lot.

    Thanks.

    Still?!?

You need to rent a Gen III and drive it for a week. Plenty of places have them, a lot of Toyota dealers even have rentals. Even if it cost you $500 it would be worth it for you to find out if the car is for you.

NO. I still have my 2008. I like both. But, I like the 2010 more.
more power, better gas mileage, better handling, better seat and driving position.

Ok. Would be nice if a certain brand or two rented their cars out.

cycledrum has already accumulated at least a week's worth of rental in the Gen III and still can't make up his mind.

Wrong. It's the massive potential resale loss on the 2009. That's The problem.

    2009 Prius package 5 - $30.4k OTD. Best case private party sale at 13k miles - ~ $19k for $.88 / mile depreciation ... or $16.5k trade in for $1.07 / mile depr. loss.

not including finance charges of $400 and ~ $2k on used seat mods.

It would be so smart to give away the 09 now wouldn't it?

2 years ago, any used Prius under $20k was salvaged title. Today about all 09 Pri's are well under $20k asking and the market is flooded with them.

LOL and you are actually considering getting rid of it? This is madness. Unless your Gen2 has a voice-activated ridicule feature and it is violating you as you drive it there is no reason in God's earth to replace it with a Gen3 if you're looking at that kind of loss. I won't have it, I expressly forbid it, in fact.

All 2009s are worth thousands of dollars less since they've just been "driven off the lot" a year before. Good resale values don't usually come until they're older.

Gas prices were high a while ago so you have to factor that in.

Buying a Prius two years ago was insane because with oil at $100+/barrel and waiting lists for them you had to swear your first born off to get one. In fact, the best vehicle to buy then was an SUV as they were not moving. So with that premium, the fact it's last-gen, and Toyota has incentives up the wazoo now and has flooded the market with Priuses it's not so surprising an 09 is going for very little. That is a peculiarly hard drop in depreciation if he's really getting those numbers from people, though.

Toyota Sunnyvale has been advertising 2010 Prius V's w/ nav for $28,688 all Summer long .... 25 at that price.

    that's only $1,114 more than my 09 ...

that's leather on the V, more power, etc, etc... argh.

Waiting a year and a half would've opened that door, but who could've known. 2 years ago it looked like waiting lists might be around for years on the new Prius.

I bought my 2008 the summer of 08 just before $4.00 gas. I loved it but realized I made a mistake when the 2010 models came out. 1 year later I traded my 08 package #5 for a 2010 package #3, $4k difference out the door. I'm glad I did it. The G3 is twice the car.

The way I looked at it I lost the money when I impulsively bought the G2 not when I traded it for the G3. In fact my 08 lost $4,000 in value since I traded it and my 2010 has only lost $3,000 so in a freakish sort of way I made money by going to the 2010!!

On a lucky private sale of this 09 pack5, would be about $8k out of pocket (19k sale, $27k otd) for equivalent III w/nav at discount price. Ah, not now. ... $10.5k out of pocket on trade in.

People have said just keep the miles low and hang in there. So, I drive my old truck which is more comfortable to sit in anyway. Not a good testament when a 22 y/o SR5 pickup is more comfortable than a $30k Prius. ' My bad'.

It's a bit of water under the bridge now but acting a little impulsively is probably what got you into this; I'd be very careful not to do it again. FWIW I knew that the gas prices were a joke. It was a glaring bubble in every sense of the word.

If you sell a barely used Prius now for another new one it won't surprise me if you're back in 18-24 months wondering about buying a PHEV. With the money you lost in that new 09 and the money you'd lose in a 2011 you could have bought a truly fabulous car, not an economical grocery getter (which the Prius is, as well as it does that beside the point), but something really fabulous.
I presume you spent money on a brand new fully loaded Prius over a paid off truck to "save money", which you never saved, even with gas at $5/gallon. You don't drive much and any gas savings in a Prius are thrown out the window with its high purchase price and now you want to do it again, yowsers!

You obviously have more money than sense, but why not buy something fun with that $8k like an 8 year old Miata? That will blow any prius out of the water in the fun department.

It doesn't matter what kind of car you have...you'll always lose money in a trade in. The only financial decision is deciding if you can easily afford this venture and that you really want a new car.
Only you can say if it's worth the price difference....everyone else has different values and perceptions as to the value of things.

I myself am in the mindset of holding onto a car until it dies. The first car I had was a Corolla that was totalled when I was in a fender bender (and the airbags were deployed, thereby totalling a 10 year car). So I didn't have any trade in when I bought my next car, a Camry. I drove it until it broke down on me last month...and found out that it was a defect in the engine that would have cost me the same as the value of the car. I was still able to get $1500 in trade in for it. It looks like I won't have any remorse for buying a 2010 Prius when it's the new generation (and it takes a few years before Toyota does another major update). I'm also not going to rush out and buy a pluggable hybrid/EV until there's a few years worth of history with them.

With the subject at hand, I can't address the differences between G2 vs G3 Prius models....but I can say that I'm still pleased with my G3 Prius. I had read some reviews citing bad nav as well as radio reception: at least with my version, I'm finding the nav to be one of the better ones I've used and my FM reception is good (XM isn't as good, and I'm probably not going to pay for a subscription). Since I wasn't seeing Prius Vs with ATP, I went for the next model I was interested in (being in a hot climate, I was interested in the solar ventilation). Financially, it might seem frivolous to go for a IV or V....but I could afford it and like having a sunroof/integrated Nav/Ipod connectivity/homelink.

Think of it this way, next year your GENII will be worth less and the
    GEN III will be more?
If you don't want or can't spend the Money don't do it !! It's just a car.
I don't know if giveaway is the right word??
The game has changed from when you bought your 2009!!
    People were paying sticker price!!

The 22 y/o pickup is a 115 HP 4 cyl that weighs 3800 lbs with 31" tires and manual tranny. It's ok to drive, but might get run over merging on freeway. I don't want anything bad enough to make a move. Prius is paid off and I'm well in the black. Just need to turn attention away from cars. I can get by on my custom seat for a few years, but it's still a bit of shock, never saw that coming.

Your 09 sounds very nice. Sorry you don't really fit in the car. I'm not as tall as you, but I have a little trouble with the pedals on my 05 being too close and the steering wheel too much of a reach. Since I love my 05, I've tried to adapt. One thing that might give your right leg a chance to relax is to hold the brake pedal with your left leg when you're stopped. I works for me. Too bad I don't need and can't afford another Prius or I'd buy yours. Sounds great to me.

Maybe you should drive it more to wear out the Integrity tires and put on some better ones. It makes the car drive way better. That might even make you happy with the car.

    Thanks, Dan
