Has anyone purchased the Gen 3 Mud flaps / guards and had them painted? I was thinking about getting it painted to match before I install them. I would be getting them painted for the side that faces away from the wheel.

You could just use rattle can paint if you want. The problem with painting the flaps is that they will eventually get rock chips. Even the face away from the tires.

I had my 2008 & 2010 models painted. I had a good paint shop do it. If you don't the paint will start peeling off in about a year. It cost me $60 for each car.

DIY may be worth a try... easy to paint before installation.

Can't see where perfectly exact color match is meaningful.
The mud guards/flaps are in a wholly different orientation
than the surrounding bodywork, and reflected light from the
nearby road surface. You'd have to get down on your hands
and knees to even try to get a good look-see on matching.

It's a car, not a concert piano.

Two 'Net sources for Toyota shake cans:

Dr. ColorChip: Automotive Paint Chip Repair Systems

PaintScratch Touch Up Paint, Spray Cans

IIRC, the "system" requires a special flex-undercoat for plastic,
color coat, and maybe a clear top coat.

    Good luck.

Heck no! My wife uses them as curb-feelers!

I painted mine with dark blue Krylon Fusion spray paint. The lid looked like a close match to my body color, but it turned out lighter on the mud flaps. They looked goofy on the car, so I've stripped them back to black.

I'm going to paint mine using all the correct stuff* and I'll post a step by step here and we'll see how they hold up. They are definitely a light duty item - not for the mud and snow folks. I live in a city with paved roads - the only hazards are running over an occasional wino now and then...

    *scuff them up
    *adhesion primer
    *base coat
    *matching paint
    *clear coat

And were I live we don't have curbs... :)

    I am and optimist...

Cool! When do you plan on finishing it by? I'd like to see pics.
