    Hi all,

I'm considering picking up a Corolla hybrid at some point. The corolla seems like a great package. 'Some point' may be a ways out though...I tend to research things to death before I commit...haha. (y)

Now...does anyone actually own one? I have seen very little talk of the Corolla hybrid here on PriusChat. If anyone does have one, I'd really appreciate any insight as to real world MPG, or any other insights.

And please...refrain from the 'why not a Prius' posts. Although not a deal breaker, I'm just not a fan of the 4th gen Prius styling. Which is part of the reason I have stuck with our 2010 liftback and 2012 v (wagon) for this long.

    Thanks in advance!

Also I think you're "reasonably close" to the US border (correct me if I'm wrong!) but Canadian-spec cars can be equipped a bit more lavishly (and the exchange rate is currently favourable to Americans) if that's up your alley. I know the US spec cars are only available in one specification with no options.

Since you're not getting a lot of response yet, I'll just share that a neighbor a couple blocks away has a Corolla hybrid and loves it. Reviews that I've read say it gets about the same mpg as the Prius.

And a Camry or Avalon hybrid will do better than that v or the Rav4.

Ol' Doug had a heck of a time coming around to anything that matters. Alex on Autos seems to usually be more rational in his reviews.

That is always a consideration. However, I like Corolla pricing better than Camry/Avalon pricing. (y)

Haha...yeah...we are in the 'Canada Junior' state...and i like it! (y)

Hmm is it even possible a USA resident to buy a vehicle from a Canadian dealership...especially these days? I never even thought that was a possibility. Never really looked into it though!

As Tideland has said, options are limited for the US version of the Corolla hybrid.

Well it’ll definitely be easier post-COVID.

You’ll have to check with your local state laws regarding importation from Canada.

For us, it’s a bit easier since we have a central website/agency where we can get info (Registrar of Imported Vehicles or RIV).

That lead to a flood of US cars imported into Canada back in 08-10 when the exchange rate was at parity. Even some of our Prius cabs were US-spec!

I notice a lot of vehicles with BC plates, recent vintage, but NO daytime running lights. Get the impression the gov is just “mailing it in”, regarding registration and inspection. CBC article:

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/karl-stoeterau-driving-lights-daytime-gary-howard-1.4381730

Also has a link regarding increasing number of “phantom” vehicles, people driving at night with JUST daytime running lights. Seems increasingly common due to dashes always lit: you don’t have a dark dash to clue you in.

    Or people disconnecting it.

Yeah. People upgrading from their 90s or 00s cars and not getting a proper briefing on how to use their new vehicles.

Also, annoyingly, toyota technicians turn the headlight switch to OFF when they service your car so sometimes it’s unintentional.

My friend has a Corolla Hybrid. He has 20K+ on it. He is getting 52mpg and has no idea how to drive a hybrid. I drove it and it was a Prius in a compact car. Even sounds like a Prius. I actually felt small compared to a Gen4 Prius inside. A Prius is like a compact truck when you consider the payload capacity with the seat down.

Anyway, the Corolla Hybrid is a good option if you want a compact car.

We rented one a little more than a year ago. We drove it around Houston, in sometimes heavy traffic, but had 2 longer trips to San Antonio and Waco. The car's dash was showing 60 MPG when we returned it. I especially liked the Lane Tracing Assist and Brake Hold features that our 2017 Prius does not have. Overall, I was very impressed.

I have a corolla hybrid. I own it since 24th of November 2020.

Specifications: 1.8 liter gasoline engine and a nimh battery (122 HP).

It is my first hybrid tbh and I don't know exactly the best tricks and tips on driving it. I average around 53 Mpg, even 55 if I drive death slow (as a side effect, I annoy other drivers with my slow driving style).

Bottom line, I love it. It is silent, it has a huge trunk, I save money on gas and it looks awesome.

After eight years in the V I started looking. The hybrid was intriguing, but the 2 liter gas Corolla was a lot nicer to drive. Limited features, the only compelling thing about the hybrid was gas mileage. But then I strayed. I saw a bright Tornado Red GTI on the lot with only 5,000 miles, and paid about the same as I would have for a Corolla SE. Hate me if you must, but it's nice to have some fun again. Pretty decent mileage too, surprised me.

I drive a 2019 Corolla Touring Sports hybrid with the 1.8 drivetrain from the gen4 Prius.
If I could have ordered it 3 months later I would have received the free upgrade to the 2.0 high power hybrid (180 hp vs 122 hp would be nice).
But regardless of that the car is a joy to drive. I do miss the low end torque from the Focus 1.6 tdci diesel I had every now and then but the Corolla encourages a relaxed driving style anyway.
In terms of fuel economy I get about the same as the Focus diesel.

But the difference between a corolla sedan and a TS is that the TS comes with a li-ion battery.

I don't know if they sell the TS corolla hybrid in the US. Far as I know they only sell the sedan, with the nimh battery.

Yes sedan only. However for 2021 model year, Corolla Hybrids will be equipped with either NiMH or Li-Ion. Not tied to any trim level or package - just whatever happens to be available at the factory that day lol.
