I love my new Prius, and am in the process of improving the stereo sound. I am about ready to install sound deadening material in the doors. I have seen people also install it under the carpet.

While the Prius is not noisy on the highway, it isnt really quiet either. I was thinking of pulling the carpet and installing sound deadening material on the floor. While driving, I can hear and feel the tire/road vibrations through the floor.

I am sure I would have to pull the front and rear seats, and the center console. How long would it take to R&R all that stuff? Any idea?

    Wow! Thanks for the pictures.

    1. Why did you have to remove the dashboard MFD?

    2. I also worried me that he had to check for codes after reassembling. Is that often a problem?

    3. Did he pull any fuses before dissassembling? Or did he just turn the car off?

    1. we had an ipod adapter in there (with wiring that ran under the carpet) that we had to remove for repair, and just decided to do it at the same time. you won't have to do that.

    2. just making sure the airbag system was all in good shape. it was not happy about not having the passenger seat in there for a couple of days. you may or may not have to recalibrate the sensor, we were prepared to do so but did not have to in the end.

    3. just started removing stuff.

and remember, disassembly always takes far less time than reassembly :)

Thanks for all the info. I will definately install the sound deadening at some time. I think I can borrow a sound level meter from my work, so I will do some before and after measurements. I wont be doing it for a few weeks, but I will definately post the results.

Be sure to check out the floor around the rear storage bins. They are quite thin, with no padding. A knuckle rap on them produced a loud drum noise.

Sound meters are actually fairly inexpensive at radio shack. I have one to make sure my exhaust is in compliance but it has also been extremely useful when balancing speakers in the home and in each of our vehicles.

I am not sure what type of sound deadening material you are going to use but I did this in my 2004 nissan sentra. It took me 2 days but I also ran some speaker wires when I did this. It took me probably an extra 3 hours with running the wires. The downfall is that for the area under your carpet you will probably add an additional 60 pounds or more. It may affect your MPG's in a SLIGHTLY negative way but not extreme.

Did you notice a reduction in road noise? What material did you use? Just the foil backed rubber? Or did you use the foil backed foam and rubber?

I used a material called Silencer sold at circuit city. the cost was $90 for 20 square feet. The noise was reduced but I put in over 70 LBS in the carpeted area and 60Lbs in the trunk area. I did not do noise testing with an audiometer before and after so I can not tell you the specifics. Both dynomat and silencer work similar as they force a small area not to vibrate without moving the area around it. It ties in areas that tend to vibrate to areas that are very strong. Use as large a piece as you can and cut it in as you go. It takes many hours and a sharp knife. Remember not to put the material over where any plastic mounts to as it will push it out the 3/32-1/8 of an inch and it is noticable. Ensure you mark the holes for seat mounting and any other mount points such as clips so it is not so aggravating to put everything back together. If you have a local stereo dealer they may reduce the price per unit if you buy a large amount or you can negotiate with circuit city as I did and get $10 off per package. Good Luck.
